We don't get nearly the severe cold weather that you North Texas guys get, but we do get a few uncomfortably(to me) cold days in Central Texas. So, here's one that you northern guys can jump on. What do you recommend for a jacket and gloves that allow you to function without feeling like the Michelin man. I guess the requirement for gloves is that they keep the mitts wrm while allowing you to quickly shed them if necessary. I don't want to break the bank on this stuff but I do want to go out on colder days. We do get some pretty mild winter days here, but you can't always count on them..

Check out Arctic Armour. They have some gloves that are real good and their bib/jackets can't be beat IMO. They may have a lighter weight than the red ones we use up here.

Long johns and fleece pants, insulated overalls, jong john top, fleece shirt and wind shirt over that up top. If I need some wind protection while running the top from my raingear works great. Or if it's really cold I have a heavy fleece pullover for outer wear.
Never could fish well with gloves on while casting a lot, so I deal with the cold. I do have a pair of neoprenes I'll wear while running or bait bishing.
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space!

+100% on Artic Armor, dry, floats you if needed, blocks all wind, it does not keep you warm BUT it keeps you your own temp all day long, don't sweat in it as it breathes. With a hoodie added I have fished in below freezing comfortable all day long, gloves are worth every cent also.

One word that you will use from this day forward to stay warm...."Layers"
The more layers you have the warmer you will be. Trust me. I fish the winter all the time and after trying all the fancy heaters and gadgets to keep you warm I found that a simple layer system works best. The lighter the better to be able to swim if you fall in of course. 1. Under thermal wear, top and bottom 2. Another pair of long johns if it is really cold 3. Light weight cotton pants like pajama bottoms 4. light weight long sleeve shirt 5. Thick pair of jeans 6. Thick wool button up shirt 7. 2 pairs of thick wool socks or 2 thin pairs if you can't get your boots on 8. Face mask for wind when on the move and sitting still in the wind 9. Good wool beanie or winter hat 10. Your cold weather outer gear (I use my H2O Express waterproof bibs for my "outer skin")
I add more shirts or bottoms if it gets really cold. Just layer and you will be happy!

Lake would be frozen in 3 weeks. Low temp outside. Fish when spring comes
Why so complicated?

I have a pair of -40 boots, Duck Quilt Carhartts and cold weather gloves from when I was stationed in ND. Last year I was nice and warm while I was fishing. Will be using the same stuff this year.
I usually wear a tee shirt, long sleeve shirt, long johns and pants underneath. It's nice to be able to take something off if you get to warm. Most of the time I just wore the tee shirt though. Texas fishing will always be warmer than sitting on a bucket over a hole drilled in the ice in ND.

You can layer without looking like that kid on a christmas story with all those layers! Lol! I agree with the layering philosophy, but there are thinner more comfortable materials that require less layers and are less restrictive. I use some cycling gear for cold weather fishing layers and fishing gear combined, they are lightweight, extremely wind and water resistant and warm. I keep a back pack with a change of clothes too in case it gets too cold or warm and you need to totally reconfigure!

My biggest thing is to layer up and then I wear the H20 bibs and jacket from Academy. I always wear either a beanie or face mask depending on how cold it is. For keeping my feet warm I like a pair of wool socks and muck boots.
I really hate fishing in gloves. I have a decent, waterproof pair that I usually wear when driving the boat. When fishing I usually just keep hands in pockets and keep a couple hand warmers in pockets. Be sure to keep a couple hand towels in the boat to keep your hands dry if they get wet.

Stay away from anything cotton. It holds moisture and cools rather than insulates

I usually start with long johns and layer up after that. I also have a thick poncho blanket I take. Cold weather to me means striper, blues or hot water discharge. Aside from moving the boat and messing with the drift sock none of those require a lot of moving around. I can sit in one spot and get warm.

Only thing that gets me is my hands, sometimes feet, but I think I got the feet under control
Cast it, reel it, jerk it.

As long as your hands, feet and head are fairly warm, being cold isn't all that bad, but I do not mean to be "freezing." Being cold isn't that bad for you. Actually, it makes your internal thermostat kick into gear and it burns fat. In other words, it's slims the body.
Regardless, layers is the key, as stated above, but when it comes to "cold fishing," I want as many tips regarding the landing of fish! I always need help. I just started bass fishing and crappie over the last couple years. I'm still learning.
I might hit some decent ponds today around 4 pm, then fish until sundown.

Mr. Roadtrip, it's depends on how long of a trip your wife needs to journey. I cannot answer that, but being cold, without overdoing it, does slim the body.
