I've been practicing something a little different. I'm working on bluegill and baitfish patterns with this style. Not liking the looks of the, but I think this craw is pretty cool. The bottom isn't finished. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

nice work sw. the craw is definitely a winner. i'd be tempted to throw some reptile eyes on that bad boy and go the frog route too.
i generally keep the bottom fairly simple

That looks good. Just pick a good bone color or brown and blend in the bottom and it will catch them. Or even that whitish blue tint to the bottom.

I already typed this once. I must have failed to hit submit...

The craw pattern is a complete rip-off of another painter's craw pattern. It was what I needed to do to practice the effect. Trying to create the effect on a pattern that doesn't have as much depth has proven to be a bit of a challenge.

I am thinking of keeping the bottom pretty simple on this craw. I was thinking bone or yellow with very little detail. It should be digging around on the bottom most of the time anyway.

Good color selection for a craw pattern. Not sure what you're saying here, "Trying to create the effect on a pattern that doesn't have as much depth...".

Bois, a bluegill doesn't have a shell--so you don't have the types of shadows and texture you have on a craw. I'm getting closer to what I'm after on a bluegill, but not quite there yet.

A faded light blue on the belly of that would be amazing!

When painting on the size of a wiggle wart, what I do becomes exponentially more difficult (at least it does for me). I thought I would apply color in a similar way, but more simplistic shadow detail like one might find on a wiggle wart.
