Can LED light strips be wired straight to a battery or do I need some type of wiring harness and relay? I realize if they are wired direct then the only way to turn them off/on is to unhook them from the battery.
I have seen a lot of boats who run them down the side of their or in their compartments, but don't know anyone who has them.
I was thinking about rigging something up for night fishing

It'a just a 12V light strip. Connect the ground to negative and run the positive through a SPST switch to the power source. Not rocket science.

Yep straight to the battery or through a switch as Bob Landry suggested. Most have very low amp draw.

Don't forget including appropriate sized circuit overload protection near the connection to the battery.

IMO, if you don't add some sort of rheostat/dimmer switch on them, you'll hate them for night fishing if you plan on leaving them on. My buddy has them on his boat and they totally kill your night vision.

I was thinking about adding a couple small strips of UV lights just to make msure catfish lines glow at night
