I have a 1996 Johnson Fast Strike and I am thinking of switching to a synthetic or synthetic blend 2 stroke oil. Two questions, what is the recommended brand and I would assume I need to clean out the old oil from the tank and start fresh with the new, yes? Thanks!

I have been running Lucas , my engine is loving it.
I get it at Academy for 34.00 a gallon synthetic blend.
I run 50 to 1 mix , one thing you will see is less smoke and a smoother running engine.
If you have a oil injection I would take the time to clean out the tank and start fresh.

If it was easy, everyone would do it

I have a friend who builds racing/bass boats engines and has for over 35 years. He recommends an oil with a high ash content for older engines such as Pennzoil XLF. It is a synthetic blend and is much cheaper than others out there. He also states all oils that have a TCW-3 rating are nearly the same!

P.S. He knows his oil, he was 93-94 world champion outboard drag racer sponsored by an oil company!

Thanks for the INFO, I can get pennzoil just about anywhere.
I may just give it a try.

I have a 96 fast strike 175, worked over and putting out about 220 at the prop.

I run pennzoil full synthetic or the blend of syn/oil at 50:1, I premix so I also add some extra for added safety.

before you do change I recommend a decarb. 2 cans of seafoam in 3 gals of gas/oil mix (or just the gas if your vro is still hooked up) and let idle for 15 mins. shut down and let it sit about 3 hrs. repeat then let sit overnight, go out next day and run it like ya stole it till gas is gone then fill up with one can seafoam to 20 gals. gas.

you will like the results.

Damn, I was just out there a couple weeks ago. It might be a bit before I get out that way again, but if I do, I'll holler at ya.
