Took both my Cabela's RLS+ Combo and Sage VXP/Orvis Access Combo out to some local city ponds that are supposedly stocked with catfish and trout . Used a Gr/Wh closer but never got a bite . Personally I think the catfish eat the trout . Anyway changed over to a nymph fly and still no bites . So quit after 3 hrs trying . These ponds are very small , maybe 1/2 acre . I really enjoyed using both combos' . Once I got more use to them with 10-15 wind got pretty good at 25-45 ft cast .

Anyway as we ( me & wife) were leaving wife noticed a sign that said Trout Stamp required for Trout fishing . This is new to me . I have Texas Combo hunt/fish license , fishing for fresh water . My question is do you have to have a trout Stamp if you fish for Trout anywhere in Texas ? I thought my freshwater license covered any freshwater fishing in Texas ??

I think the sign you were reading is old, prior to 2004, you needed a trout stamp to fish for them, but that has since been discontinued. You are good with your freshwater license.

As far as trout, everything I've been taught is that their health is extremely compromised in water past 70 degrees due to low oxygen concentrations. As a result, the only year round fishery is the Guadalupe below the Canyon Lake dam, but with all the heavy rain we had had this year, the higher water temperatures supposedly wiped out even those. In December or January when (or if) the water cools down, TPWD will start stocking ponds, lakes, and rivers with trout. Expect heavy pressure and a tough bite for the first couple of weeks.

To add to what MassAction said, all the reading I have done shows that the ponds stocked with trout are fished-out very quickly after stocking.

Trout are stocked in various community lakes during the winter. 5 fish limit and no stamp needed in a community pond. These are pt and take fish. Trout cannot survive the summer months in Texas but in a couple of places.
hatchery raised stocker trout never taste as good as wild trout but it is the only trout fishing most Texans ever see.

It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.... W.C.Fields

I know a little about a lot of things but not a whole lot about anything....CGD

A place can get fished out in a week or two after it is stocked, others receive stockings several times in a season. Gotta play it by ear. We have seen some Trout caught in our local pond as late as March and April. This past year did catch one as late as May from a pond that is down stream from the pond that is normally stocked.
Video.

Thanks everyone for your inputs and links ! Maybe I need to call the TPWD and mention to them the local pond by name and tell them about the sign so the city can take it down .

MassAction thanks for the info and link . Actually I had that bookmarked , that's how I found out about the two parks ponds in my town . But thanks for the reminders .

KurtActual , around this town especially I figured they were already fished out but had fun fishing and getting in practice wink .

grandpa75672 , thanks for the links , cool video ! We had over 30 days above 100 this year . I wonder if the catfish even made it ?

I just contacted City Parks Mgr and let them know their Trout Stamp sign is no longer in compliance with the TPWD dept . I let them know only a Freshwater Stamp is required so they were appreciative of the update and will take action to correct the sign . They also let me know they will be stocking again as soon as it turns cool . I let them know the TPWD website will announce when and where they will stock sometimes in late November . They said thanks . So now i'll need to watch and see if they remove or change the sign now . wink
