Curious on when to throw each? I love walking the dog with a gunfish! When should I be throwing a popper instead? Thanks for any feedback.

I throw a YM 1/4 oz and have no problem popping it and walking it. I know its not the same action as a spook but I've had more luck with YM than a walker.

I like to work poppers in shallow water, but top water fishing for me in deeper water with a Zara Spook has been best for me for bigger fish.

Each will have their good days; so have them both tied on and let the fish tell you that. Here is my technique for fishing my Spook. I just have not caught any huge fish while walking the bait. All over 10# have come on this technique. It takes lots of practice and a bait modified to make it do the tricks. http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/9017115/#9017115

I generally throw poppers in the wind, spooks when it's calm. Seems to work for me.

SE Kansas grass grower I'm the exact opposite. Poppers for calm and spook types in wind.

I started learning and perfecting this technique after seeing the two larges Bass in my life time of fishing on Lake Amistad. Both had stunned their pray and they were quivering on the surface; thus the Dying Quiver. Both pray were barely moving but turning in a tight circle. When the huge Bass are on their pray nothing you can do will excite them to change their mind and hit your bait. The only other hope that you may have if you see this take place is presents of two big Bass there and they are in competition. Then one of them may take your spook if you are presenting it properly. Bass seem to not care whether they were the one that knocked the bait senseless or not; so any large Bass in that range of explosion may just take you up on the offering. It has happened many times on many lakes.

I throw poppers around cover, tight spots etc, usually calmer water, spooks for me at least, are more open water and windy. This is a general rule but can go either way.

Generally, I like to throw a popper when the water is clearer or if there isn't any wind. I also like to throw a popper around cover because I'm more accurate with it than a walking style bait. Now for walking style baits, those are good for over deep water, dirtier water, and schooling fish. A walking style bait really excels with a little chop on the water.

I use to be the same way, but someone several years ago talked me into switching. Although generally I do poppers/wind, spooks/calm doesn't mean I don't change it up. SE Kansas grass grower
