Everytime I try to fish a jig or a worm on a point or in grass I can never "feel" the bait and it's always on a slack line. What am I doing wrong I bought the biggest bullet weight at walmart.

Perhaps your bait is on soft bottom, like a mud bottom. The only time you'll feel your bait is if it goes over a hard bottom such as rock or if a fish hits it, and that's all that really matters. You won't feel your bait 100% of the time either, because sometimes rock transitions into soft bottom and vice versa. Don't worry about not feeling the bottom all of the time or feeling your bait all the time. The important thing is to notice how your bait feels when theres no fish on it, whether it's in grass, wood, rock, etc.. Noticing how your bait feels when you do/don't have a fish on is critical.

Slack line has been good for me. Especially big fish do not like any resistance when they pick it up. Like bigbass94 said feeling things is a learned experience over time. When I pick it up and feel resistance hook sets are free until you learn the difference between rock, wood, grass and your main objective the fish.
Even on a C-Rig I use a light weight so there is no resistance for the Bass to take it and swim away. I fish it on slack line when casting. When dragging I will move it as little as possible and strip off a a couple of yards of line as the boat is moving then feel for the fish each time before I move it again, then repeat. Using scent helps them hang on to it longer which gives you those few seconds of slack line presentations between each move.

I love jig it and worm fishing. You will learn what the weight is hitting like rocks and tree limbs. You will get use to it. But I will say I recently figured out you won't feel a bite but the line will feel heavy and I now know how many fish I didn't set the hook on. The big fish just barely bite or don't even realize they do sometimes. Tungsten is awesome Sometimes it makes you think your getting pecks when its falling in between rocks.

You shouldnt have a slack line in my opinion because you drag a jig then reel on the slack. If youre hopping it you may be hopping it too far and have a slow reel that cant keep up with the distance youre hopping. I have tension on my lure at all times and when it goes slack i set the living life outta the hook.works like a charm every time. Btw those berkley lightnings try a h2o express from academy , much better rods great sensitivity and theyre only a little more than the berkleys.

What rod? Please don't say ugly stick! Berkley lightning shock rod 7"ft med heavy 40$ at walmart I stopping buying expensive rods after I broke them so many times Sounds like there's part of the problem there. Nothing wrong with not wanting to fish expensive equipment, but there is definitely a threshold from what is good, average and bad in terms of performance. In all reality, just about anything under the $89 threshold is not going to be up to par with what is "expected" out of bass fishing. When you read an article and they are speaking about "feeling" bottom or backbone, bend etcetera, they are not writing this with a $40 rod in mind, so you can't have the same expectations in actual real life situations, in your case, feeling everything on the bottom. $99 to $149 rods are generally what the majority of bass anglers use. That's just kind of the reality of it. I would say start there if you are that adamant about learning and feeling what you read about and expect. On that same note, like mentioned earlier switching to tungsten and fluorocarbon line can very much improve sensitivity, though, in my opinion, save that money in the beginning and get a better rod as it will give you more results than the line and tungsten. More bang for you $ since both fluoro and tungsten can be expensive. (Shameless Plug) If you aren't wanting to spend a lot on a rod, and want something that will last, and in your case has a great warranty for broken rods or repairs, check out Denali Rods.

A more sensitive rod and lighter line will help. Floro is fantastic, you have some good suggestions to follow in this thread.
It will cost a bit more than what you have invested but it will probably catch you more fish!

You're not doing anything wrong per se. It takes time but when you get your first solid tap or thunk when they're really hammering on a Texas rigged worm or a jig, you will be on your way. No big deal. Don't start out expecting to catch fish that are light biters. As stated above, you may not even feel a bite. It doesn't cost anything to set the hook. You'd be surprised how many times I've picked up & just felt a slight resistance (more than the weight & rig weighs) set the hook & have a GOOD fish on. Also didn't set the hook & it just came free & KNEW then a fish had it most likely &I missed it. LOL.. Also have set the hook on limbs,stumps,grass,weeds,rocks,etc.. but that's where the fish are.It just takes time to get that feel. Don't give up & keep on working those worms & jigs. You'll learn it quicker than you think.
