Does anyone know some really good spots on any creeks or rivers in the area to do some wade fishing for Gar, Bass, and Sunfish. Especially Gar.

This time of year, the gar get harder and harder to find. During the summer they are plentiful. One place you might try is the Guadalupe starting at Rio Raft, and wading upriver, I've seen schools of 8-10 fish in knee deep water just hangin out
Tight lines and God bless!

During months between April thru October the spillway below the Mcqueeney and Placid Dam is very good! Need a boat or kayak. All the bank area is private property.

With the gar, there are generally two ways to do it.
1: use a frayed nylon rope tied onto the shank of a hook, then cut the hook with wire cutters or tin snips right at the bend. The teeth should get snagged up in the rope. But when they bite, don"t set the "hook", let them chew on it for a second or two then apply slight pressure.
2: Use any type of baitfish pattern tied onto a circle hook. the important part though is to tie the fly so that when it is stripped through the water the hook is riding down, not up. the top jaw of a gar is essentially a bone plate, the bottom however is very soft and fleshy.

On point 1, I've tied these nylon strings on both sinking and floating flies. I personally don't use them very often as they aren't a TPWD recognized fly. They are fun to use though. On point 2, since you are using a circle hook do you simply put tension on the line and let the gar hook itself? Great information, I've tied some on circle hooks but I used a clouser pattern and tied them hook up. I know better now. Thanks for sharing.

I normally use the clouser pattern as well, it works great. As for setting the hook, I've always given it a second and then set the hook like i would a bass, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. the hook has to almost be perfect in that bottom jaw. It's a hit or miss, but that is what makes it challenging and fun.
I hope you can get some good ones, love to see some pictures.

I hope you can get some good ones, love to see some pictures. Actually, they are so thick below Lake Somerville dam at times that I usually try to avoid them, LOL. But, if that's all that's biting I might try again. I learned if I am fishing with conventional gear I can't reel in my jigs at a constant rate. If I do I'll catch a gar on every cast sometimes. That's one thing I learned about gar fishing. Keep the lure or fly moving at a constant pace. Thanks again for the information.

To keep you fly constantly moving tuck the rod under your arm and pull in your line hand over hand at whatever speed you desire.

Gar action is great on the Lower Colorado right now (LoCol is on fire for all species as a matter of fact). Unfortunately you need a kayak, SUP Board, or large piece of styrofoam to fish it effectively though. It's too deep to wade and doesn't have great bank access.

I wonder how the fishing is in that area. It may be time to give it another try. It was slow fishing there this summer.
