The general reliability of these reels is legendary and I've read nothing but negative comments about them. I would never take a chance on one but I'm really curious. What is it about these reels that make them destined for a mechanical failure. I guess I'm asking the difference between the C3 6500 and the BCX. Has anyone ever upgraded one of these with Abu parts?

They are made in China use cheaper components. Thats why they get the bad rap. Just a cheap chinese plastic version of the sweden made Abu's. Also dont I recall you saying you wouldn't spend or save or whatever $20 on a cheap chinese reel?

You recall correctly, and I would never buy a BCX, I was just curious about them because of so many negative statements that have been posted about them and I was wondering why, if it was possible, so few people upgrade them to the point of being reliable I'm an Abu fan, but if it doesn't say Sweden, I pass on it..

The Abu "S" models are also another to avoid, and there is a video on YouTube by a guy from PMR that strips one down and compares it to a Swedish made 6600.

the gears are made out of cardboard and they use crisco oil. The drag is made from tin foil.
