225 3.0L EFI is down 2 cylinders. Any advise on whether to do repower or new motor? I know cost is the big decision point.... this is 99 cobra 201. If youve had any success or horror stories either way let me know.

Might check with these guys to get a rebuild estimate. http://www.texasoutboardrebuild.com/index.html The real question is what caused the two cylinders to drop. If that's not fixed, it will do it to the new powerhead. If you really love the hull and don't want to change, then re-power may be the way to go. If you did a re-power and tried to sell it anytime soon, getting the full value out of the motor is a likely problem.

Still have a 2001 yamaha running like a top from a rebuild back in 2010.

Texas outboard rebuilders is your way to go.The fact the you're in a 99 201 champion,I have a buddy with this same set up and its sweet. Boat runs like a scalded dog and ride rough water like nobody's business. I have an 01 225 Efi and TOR rebuilt mine in 14 and I haven't been back at all. Motor is flawless 2yrs in and they give you a 4yr warranty on everything they touch.2yrs at 50 percent. Pm me if you have any questions.

BTW, they do rebuild your motor from top to bottom or if you request they will only fix the blown cylinders which wouldn't make much sense, whatever caused the problem in the first place is still there. The 2 stroke 225 mercs are bulletproof, they don't have problems.

That's pretty good for a 99 3.0L to last 17 yrs. you got all she had, 2strokes wear out like everything else. My 225 HPDI is 12 yrs old, I think about what might happen one day. And it will happen, when it does I think I'll go with a new 4stroke repower.. No more 2 cycle oil, will save money in the long run. I run my boat a lot.. Good luck on your decision, it's a big one no doubt.

I used texas machine works in grand prairie over two years ago to rebuild my efi 225 and haven't had any issues at all. Took me a couple phone calls at first to get ahold of them but they finished everything on time and no issues at all.
