So Im installing a 598ciHD SI to the console of my 99 tracker 165 and ran into a snag. 1. I cant get the side panel off where the throttle is so I can run the ducer cord and power cord for the unit to the back of the boat. I've removed the drivers seat and the 3 or 4 screws at the bottom of the panel but it still wont come off. It seems its stuck at the top but I cant see any screws on the top. I even removed the throttle handle and nothing. Any ideas? Also I was wondering whats the difference in wiring the unit directly to the starting battery with an inline fuse vs just wire to the convenient fuse box located right underneath the console? Maybe I should of just paid someone todo this but whats the fun in that!

you should have about 4 or 5 screws on top, mine does. They are probably hidden in the carpet especially if you have never had to remove the cover. The reason you want to wire directly is that the fuse panel are usually not wired with large enough wire from the battery. You will have a number of accessories pulling power from the same source and will cause issues with the Fish Finders performance. I wired mine straight to the fuse panel years ago and the unit would shut down when I started the motor. These units nowadays need good clean dedicated power

Ill take a second look on the top and see if I cant find the screws. Do you have a tracker too? After that side panel comes off do you just run the wires to the back or would you take the whole back deck off?

Once you get that panel off you will will see where the other wires and cables go through to the back. You shouldn't have to remove anything else. On mine getting it to the battery compartment is some what difficult but I have had to do it a number of times.

Found them. They were actually on the outside of the boat up underneath the metal lip of the boat....weird to me.

Running a power wire straight to the starting battery will eliminate any RFI possibilities.

On most trackers that doesn't have to be removed. A fish tape into the back side will come out at the console.

The key is to do some exploring with a fish tape to find out where you can and can not run wiring. Once you know where it's going pull a messenger line with the fish tape and then pull one with every wire you pull so you will alwys have one there. I installed a trolling motor, a HB on the bow and another one on the console and networked them all together with ethernet. I think my total time was around five hours, so it does take time to do it right, but if you do you won't be wasting time later chasing down phantom electrical problems. A label maker for marking wires as you run them is a worthwhile investment. I've done complete wiring upgrades on old Chris Crafts and I can tell you there is no fast way to do it right and cheap and reliable do not work well together when doing electrical on a boat. Usr quality wire and components. You won't be sorry you spent a little bit more.

I use an old fiberglass rod with all the eyes removed. Sometimes it works better than a fish tape because its stiffer.
