Here are three more:

1. Braid
2. Braid
3. Braid

Not to be a SA but if you aren't using braid on your spinning reel with a fluoro or mono leader you are dealing with WAY more headaches than necessary.

To me, leaders are their own headache.

Well, the good news is it is about 1/100th the problem on spinning reels that it is on baitcasters. We are off to a great start just by using them.

I don't recall seeing it, but the primary reason I have ever had issues with knots and tangles on spinning gear is when I am adding new line and I look over and see that if I can squeeze on just a bit more, I can use up the remaining line source. Bad mistake!!!; but, I think we have all done that, not wanting to leave a few yards unused where it might go wasted. What good is 10 yards of braid?

But, on spinning reels, you must stay away from full spools and I like to leave a little less that 1/4" or so.

Braid, too, is obvious. Since it doesn't "spring" off the spool having no memory, no elasticity . . . it behaves much better than fluoro or mono.

Always closing the bail with the reeling hand helps, too, to avoid line twisting.

Technique-wise, you can also eliminate line issues, again especially with fluoro and mono, by never reeling in against the drag. To do so means no line is being taken up but you are putting twists in it. Later, when you cast, a twisted line will be less manageable coming off the spool. Reeling in a fish on spinning tackle is different than with a baitcaster: you let the drag work, when it is time, you lift up on the rod tip to gain ground on the fish, then reel down on the line to take up slack. Repeat this until the fish is ready to grab.

Anyway, some ideas.

Brad
