Fishing by myself I knocked rod and reel overboard, saw it sinking and bent over bow of boat and went in head first. I am 65 years old and this was first time to ever happen. Fortunately was wearing inflatable a/m vest and it worked perfectly. If you fish alone I recommend like I do play it safe and always wear PFD! By the way I did retrieve rod and reel and will always carry a dry set of clothes onboard from now on. I'm sure the diving judges would have scored me -10.

Glad you are ok. I have thought about this happening, and since I am 65yo, 6'4", 230 lbs, I am looking at ways to get back in my 14' tinny. Did you have a ladder?

Happened to me while fishing Amistad a few years back. First time and hopefully the last! Glad you are OK and were able to get back in your boat. Remember tackle can be replaced. You can't!

In an emergency, you can always use the cavitation plate on the engine as a step and come over the transom into the boat. It will work. But, much mo betta to have a ladder.

No I did not have a ladder, but will be buying one soon. On my Skeeter it has the hand rails to hold onto and as someone stated earlier you can go up on the cavitation plate. If water had been cold and rough it could have been bad situation.

Can't stress enough about PFD. I've gotten into the habit of wearing it at all times. And even if I had not been able to get back into boat, I was not going to sink. I wear the A/M vest from Bass Pro, and as I stated earlier it worked perfectly.

Thanks for sharing...glad you are okay....should be a reminder for all of us that it can happen...it doesnt matter how many life jackets or pfd's you have in the boat...the only one that matters is the one that you wear..I am 65 like you and also wear an a/m vest ...havent fallen out yet...but have had a number of close calls...

I fish alone mostly and thru the winter. My biggest fear is falling in cold water and not be able to get myself back in the boat. Always on my mind. Come close tripping around on deck which is why I don't use seat on deck.

Another tip, if you have the trolling motor in the water, the motor housing can also be used as a step. Though the cav plate on the big motor is and better option and easier.
I fell in for the first time two years ago in February. It was 45 degrees outside and the water temp was 45 degrees. Made for a chilly 20 minute ride back the the ramp where I loaded the boat up and went to the cabin for a change of clothes, a hot shower, and cup of coffee. Was back on the water about 1.5hrs later.
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space!

Yes I have extra underwear and socks in the boat. Next time I go in will be #5 Welsh,Fork x2 (daytime),and Beaver lake. Glad your ok Blackhorse. Last time was winter and I had winter overalls on and they filled up water, so I had to disrobe before attempting to get back in boat. Yes there was concern that I was going to make it out of the situation.

I have a duffel bag stuffed with wool boot sox, under ware, pants, long sleeve shirt, fleece jacket, rain jacket, gloves and a towel. I leave it in the back seat of my truck through the winter months and when I launch my boat it goes in. If I get caught off guard by the weather or fall in, I'm ready.

I know my day is coming. Came as close as you can without getting wet. Spinning the boat around with the trolling motor and hit a stump under the water. Slung me down on all my poles. I always my auto inflate when I'm by myself. I don't have a ladder but used to climb up the motor when I was a kid from skiing for years. Problem is I'm not a kid any more.

Glad it ended well for you blackhorse. PFD's rule.
I was jerked overboard twice from a 14 jon boat while running trotlines with hooked, huge flatheads playing games with me. Could have been a disaster or like Trump would say "a di-zass-tuh".

I also wear an inflatable PFD. We keep 2 of track suits, we got on clearance, in separate bags. We used the seal-a-meal to to make the bags more compact. They are both about the size of a softball and are permanently in a compartment on the boat. This way they don't take up much room and are always there and protected.

I'm 64 yrs old, over weight and crippled. I fish alone most of the time. Last week I bought a rope latter at BPS and just this morning I began wearing a PFD at all times while in the boat. We old worn-out guys have play smarter.

I've been launched from my bass boat twice on Conroe fishing in the wind in stumps. Both times it was cold. That's why I quit using the little flip-over levers on the trolling motor foot buttons; I want it to shut off if I go overboard. I carry a beach towel, dry insulated coveralls, and matches in a waterproof bag in the winter. I always worried about getting hung up in a trotline when that happens....

Glad your ok! I always bring my back pack with me, I pack a few small snacks, super bright flashlight, 9mm pistol, extra hat, extra sunglasses, extra pair contact lenses, towel, and complete change of clothes. I have almost gone in a few times myself, mainly when I have the trolling motor on 100 and forget while the motor is sideways! But at least I have a ladder if I do ever need it!

We old worn-out guys have play smarter. Don't count on that rope ladder to save your life when you are wet, cold and running out of energy. They swing under the boat when you are climbing and make you fall backwards. I strongly suggest, since you are crippled (or not), that you get a rigid folding ladder that best fits your boat and try it out during the summer when you have a buddy with you..

I'm 70 and fish year-round and alone most of the time. I always wear my inflatable vest.
I wonder just how difficult it would be to climb back into the boat if I fell in while wearing my snowmobile suit! It's difficult enough to get it on and off when on dry land.
For proper inflation the manufacturer states that the life vest should go on the OUTSIDE! OK, that complicates the issue of how I take off a water-logged snowmobile suit in the water! Do I wear the vest properly and expect to REMOVE it while in the water to get off the wet snowmobile suit, or do I wear it under the snowmobile suit and take the chance it won't inflate properly? Maybe I shouldn't wear the snowmobile suit. Or maybe I should just fish when the water is warm enough to fall in!

Glad you made it back out okay, I am 38 and abiding by the same rules. In fact, just bought myself a new Mustang inflatable so I could wear it in better comfort.

The boarding ladder on my ranger boat doesnt have enough steps deep enough for us seniors to use ... we stopped last summer and went swimming and for the first time tried to get back in using the ladder. Advanced age and all i finally got into the boat but if I had an issue, or if it was cold, or i had a bunch of clothes on, im not sure if i could have done it.Wife was unable to get up using the ladder...it was quite a struggle, probably easier to use the trim on the motor and cavitation plate in an emergency...Fishing alone mostly too, i always wear my inflatable and always carry a knife i can get to

Glad you are ok! Had to help someone back in their boat on Fork and let them borrow a sweatshirt a few years ago in early spring. I have been close many a time, hope I can avoid it altogether. I like the idea of a dry bag always in the boat.

I am diabetic and my feet are mostly numb which makes my balance terrible. I just purchased an inflatable PFD and will be wearing religiously from now on. Will either mount a handrail of some type at the back of the boat near the motor so I can use the anti-cavitation plate and power trim to lift my fat butt up on to the boat. Going to try to find a handrail about 12" long to mount to rear of boat. I'm also 60 yrs old and don't have the wind or the strength that I use to have.

Happened to me yesterday on Rayburn. Full Rain gear on. Hard to swim with that stuff on. First thing I did when I came up was look around for any judges. I got lucky the boat was not moving cuz the shore was,a long way away.

Back when I had a bay boat we were fishing Burtons ditch on an incoming tide. I decided to catch some live bait in the castnet so I got my wife to control the boat with the big motor because I didn't want to end up in the rocks...long story short I got caught up in catching bait and not paying attention to where we were and the boat slammed into the wood piles and knocked me out...probably the scariest moment I've ever had on the water. All I could think about was getting tangled in the piles and crab line and drowning

My brother fell out earlier this year. He leaned over to raise trolling motor big boat had gone by and wake tossed him out like a bronco. He fell all over the trolling motor as you can see made good contact. Not wearing PFD and is older than Christmas, bad knee and not as spry as he used to be. He was very lucky. Not shallow enough to touch bottom used the big motor to get back in and he said it was a miracle that he got in. Phone in pocket it drowned couldn't call for help. I happened to see him at ramp about a hour after the ordeal. After a lengthy scolding about his age and dangers he wears a PFD all time now. Be safe as you can be it's important to all who care for ya. Also thanks Blackhorse for starting this thread.
