Okay, I have to admit this pic is not of me, however I felt this pic has to qualify as the worst hook up I've ever seen in over 50 years of chasing after jaws...

Well I'm not sure my story is the worst, but at the time it was horrific. This happened when I was around 13 or 14 years old. I grew up in a neighborhood that had 3 ponds connected by dams which flowed from one to another. I was really lucky to be able to fish as much as I did and went most days after school. After fishing my backyard pond I had progressed to the second one. While walking the bank I found a Red/White Heddon Lucky 13. This was a huge find for me, as my arsenal just grew! At this point I had caught a few 2-3 pounders and was ecstatic. The time era was pre-80's and I was rocking some really short cut-off jeans. Sounds odd now but then it was not. Obviously, I couldn't cast and make tracks so I put the back treble in my jeans. Hindsight huge mistake!

I made it about 15 yards and the back treble sunk about 2 inches below the boys inside my thigh. The next step proved to be worse, as I hung that "Lucky 13" in the other thigh about 1 inch above the other thigh. Now you have to understand this is pre- cell or anything other than your voice. I am now about 10 yards from any trees and cant put my foot down. I hopped the distance each time bringing tears to my eyes. Once I got to the tree I still couldn't put my foot down, but at least had a leaning post.

All I could do was yell for help. This went on for 30-45 minutes. Finally someone came down and found me. This was a nine year old kid. I asked her to send their parent down to help me, and told her to call my mom. My dad was out of town. At this point I am about to pass out! My mom was working and it took another 20 minutes to get ahold of her.

Finally she shows up with a pair of needle nose pliers. These are most likely mid-sixties Craftsman as that's what my dad rocked at that time and hadn't traded them in. Cut like butter is not how I would describe them. She ripped and tore the best that a 120 pound woman could do on spent pliers. Each time I thought kill me I have lived a good life! Growing up with water in my back yard since I could walk was enough.

Well the pliers didn't work, and as time grew more people came home from work. Well this is good and bad. Now I am the story of the neighborhood. Side note: Get the F'ing hooks out, or at least one, remember I cant put my foot down, or laying down if I move a fraction of an inch I am getting hammered with that decision. Finally the home owner comes down when he is off work and cuts the bottom treble with bolt cutters. At this point it only could have gotten worse if I was laying in a bed of fire ants.

From here we get in the Datsun 280Z to the emergency room. The Doctor actually laughed when he saw what happened. Time from hook set to time of removal (4 Hours). I wasn't laughing.

I am sure there is much worse, but all I can say it was a bad afternoon for me!

Buddy and I had snuck into a great area on the White River in Meeker, CO. It was winter time and everyone had left the property because they didn't plow the roads. Snow shoed in and fished all day having great success. We were about to leave when we heard snowmobiles coming.

Started to run for the trees and all of a sudden I heard him start cussing. Turned to see the Panther Martin spinner stuck in his cheek bone right below his eye. It was buried deep in the bone and it was all I could do to get it out with needle nose pliers. We packed the area with snow for a few minutes and he didn't even feel the barb rip his skin on the way out.

Very lucky he didn't get his eye.

In college I buried a 3/0 gamakatsu worm hook into my forearm. I was trying to pull the lure off some cover and when it finally came off it was headed straight to me. All I could do was turn and let it hit. Unfortunately it hit just right, and a pegged tungsten weight carried enough momentum to bury it in there. I pushed it through but wasn't strong enough with my non dominant hand to to anything past that. The barb wouldn't mash good enough. It was april fools so the 5 people I called thought it was a joke and hung up on me. I ended up having to drive back to the dorm and knock on random peoples doors until someone could help.

Not 6 months later at a tournament on fork I got hooked again. It was day one of a 2 day event and it was only 8:15. I caught a dink and while I was trying to get it back in the water I dropped him. He pulled the crank bait into my thumb and commenced his hissy fit. My dad, not knowing what to do, opted to laugh as I was battling to catch this fish to unhook him from me so I could then unhook myself. The hook must have gone right into a nerve cause my arm hurt all the way up to my elbow. I finally got a hand around this fish, and my dad said I was squeezing so hard it's eyes were bulging. He helped unhook the fish, but wouldn't do the line trick, so I had to do it to myself. Didn't finish too well in that tournament, but did fish the whole thing.

Man, I'm sure that wasn't funny at the time, but I got a chuckle from it. LOL perfect outline.

Over the years I have gone twice to a doctor to get hook removed. I was fishing a trout stream near Cherokee, NC (on vacation) and got snagged on a tree across the stream. Yanked it off and the mepps spinner came flying straight back into my forearm. Could not get it out and gave up to go to doctor. My dad drove me and we went to an acute care office, but they said they would not treat me because I wasn't a native american (Cherokee is on an Indian reservation). The lady at the desk was cringing as she said that and told me to go to the local hospital. So went to ER and doctor did great job of removing. The lidocaine shots hurt more than the removal. I told the ER doctor that it was one of my best trout lures but he wasn't impressed. I still find it funny but my wife not so much.

Being in the fishin' biz for so many years I thought I'd seen some...stuff. Many times as I've been hooked and seen folks what got hooked, and a few good ones, none comes close to some of what's showed up here.

Makes a person wonder if they shouldn't give up such a dangerous, unpredictable hobby an' take up somethin' safe like flyin' in one of them body suits or free divin' in caves.

I jes' remember my female coworker, normally tough as any guy, tougher, nearly fallin' out when I made her push one of them 5/0 worm hooks through my upper arm so's she could hack the barb off'n it. "Doesn't it hurt?"..."Why hail yes it hurts, just do it!" It got me like the one in Wormdunk's awesome pic, but in the arm and into the meat.

A fella just can't appreciate how tough his own skin is until he's gotta do something like that or have it done to him. Even a good fish hook don't go through so easy.

So I think about that an' read these stories....uuuuhrrrrr...makes my spine tingle.

Luckily I've never been hooked! I guess I'm just a careful angler by nature!

I did go out one time with two buddies on a john boat. One thought he had a bite, and pulled his pole so hard that his rooster tail came flying back like a bullet, and hooked my other buddy in the head.

The treble hook was hooked into his skull!

But a couple dozen wiggles later, we got it out. Unfortunately he didn't want to fish after that...

Realistic, multi jointed, bubbling, gurgling bait? I think so!

been hooked a bunch of times. no biggie... usually!
I remember a few, though.......
1. Arkansas, 1994. the dimwit son of my boss just HAD to show me how well he could pitch a
Snag-pruf frog with his new shimano. he did great! right into my left shoulder! worked it out, but it took an hour. lot's of you know how big that ole double hook was on those lures.
2. Mckinney- stonebridge ranch (before it got popular) winter '99, fishing a big fluke, set the hook close, it launched into the tree above my head. second jerk created a 3rd, with a 5/0 gamakatsu in my side. quick push-thru before it started hurting. no problema!
3. Scat Cat 2013, 160 miles offshore, middle of the night, pitching boat, wide open tuna bite. Had to re-rig. Went upstairs, boat lurched, I planted my hand on a bench, right into a 3/0 Owner ST-66 treble hook (have you seen one of these?) straight into my palm. twist n yank
out of pure reflex & it was done. won a $45 "worst injury" jackpot on that one.....
4. 1987, offshore (again) in SoCal. Wide open yellowtail bite, haul back & cast my 6oz Salas
metal jig with a little too much line off the end. damn near knocked myself out when it hit me in the back of the head at full speed. jig swung over & smashed out the glass lens of my new $120 Vuarnet Tortoise-shell wayfarer's.... hooked in the top of the head, thru my hat, no less.blood everywhere. what is it with scalp wounds? they bleed like crazy!
Another yank-n-pray, some peroxide & paper towels, back to fishing. had to fish with no sunglasses for the rest of the trip! got 3 stitches from a deckhand back at the dock.
that hurt more than the hook.
Still pretty sure that 13/0 circle hook in the neck beat all those, though

When I was young I was standing behind a kid throwing an inline spinner the treble buried in my head less then 1/8" away from my temple. More recently a crank stuck in my finger
