Been playing around with shooting through steel wool. It has an interesting effect. Not sure if the photo shows it all that well.

the 0000 size works best. you can pull it apart some to open up and allow more paint to get to the bait. try pulling it apart and shoot just along the edge.

pulled apart 0000 and wrapped the baits. Sprayed color then moved it. Sprayed some more. Kept doing that until I got the desired color. Makes the color uneven with lines in it.

The finish looks a lot like a catfish's skin. One of the largest bass I've ever caught, 12+ lbs., had a small mudcat in its gullet. The steel wool mask could be used to create a lure pattern based on baby catfish:

Thanks bois. I've not even thought of doing baby catfish. I know they eat them.

Bullhead catfish spawn in the mouth of streams normally found in the back of coves. In the Southern US, they prefer waters in the 75 to 80 degree range for spawning areas. I guarantee when the bullhead spawn is on largemouth bass are there, along with other species of catfish, to feed on the baby bullheads. I've been intent on doing a baby bullhead catfish pattern on a squarebill, but just haven't gotten around to it....yet. Thank you for the great idea on how to mimic bullhead catfish skin using steel wool as a mask.
