The Fall migration of Flounder from our Bays to the GOM has been slowed due to water temperatures. Water temps remain in the 80's which means flounder are staying put. I expect it may be Mid Nov. for any real movement. For many decades, just something to go by, "When you see Ducks and Geese Migrating"...it's flounder time!! We have two more weeks before the daily limit changes from 5 to 2. This usually lasts thru the month of Nov. but has been known to continue thru Mid Dec. Pay attention to the regs. On another note...during the month of Nov., NO GIGGING AT ALL. Getem' while you can folks. Stay Safe and remember to Take a Kid Fishing. fish

This upcoming weekends front should get some moving. I was out in the bay today and saw a few eaters chasing shrimp up shallow. Could only get one tiny 10" flattie to commit.

Little males are out....Usually I can tell they are moving is when I catch a nice one, turn it over and look at the belly. If it's RED...and looks scratched up..that's a good sign.

Since this thread concerns Flounder, let's stick with Flounder only. Their are many arti's one can use. Flounder are SIGHT FEEDERS. They like FLASHY baits. That means some color that will catch their attention. Soft baits to Jigs...that's a personal choice. Soft baits...Red/White Tail, solid White, solid Red,Chart.,Yellow etc. Carolina rigged to Tandem rigged....Gulp 4"New Pennies are good..baits with Curly Tails are used.
I would like you to Google up video's by John Skinner. He's fishes the East Coast and is very knowledgeable in flounder catching....in the surf or deep waters. You will get addicted to his video's. Last year I ordered all kinds of baits he used and discussed...from Spro Bucktail jigs, weighted hooks, Gulps 4" mullet Imitations in the above colors. Can't wait to use them this year. Good Luck...

Plum Chartreuse Bass Assassins.

Here is a pic of one taken back in 2005 when a 11 Yo Tim caught a nice flounder with one rigged on a Chartreuse/RedEye Rockport Rattler jig I invented.

11 years later that set up still works catching flounder.

Me and some buddies are headed to Bolivar a little northeast of the ferry this weekend. This will be the earliest I've ever gone but it's the only time we can all make it. We will fish the concrete walls and maximize the dock lights. We're taking a portable green light and going to throw everything from Fish bites to Gulp at the flounder. I guess we will see if the front and timing will be good or bad.? Any thoughts on my plan?

Flounder really like a variety of flies too or that has been my experience. I've never particularly focused on flounder, but it has a been a nice unexpected benefit to fly fishing. The flies they hit usually have a lot of flash. I seem to have better luck getting them in on the fly versus conventional plastic tails. My biggest on the fly came this past March at 4 pounds.

Work the Incoming Tide...it won't be that big of a Front coming thru and I suspect it will not drop water temps to a noticeable change. In 2 days it will be gone and temps will go back up !! What area/s one fishes down here will determine HOW you fish that area. Some areas are good for outgoing tides and vice versa. It always pays to be prepared for the changes. You may want to rig a Slip Cork setup. I use a regular 6" styrofoam..non slit, weighted cork. $1 a piece. at Cut Rate. I always buy a dozen at a time. BTW: I normally use Live bait under a cork. For Flounder I'll use finger mullet, mud minnows or my Flashy Jig setups..Good Luck

Thanks for the reply V-bottom. I will be prepared. We will also try Rollover Pass as we will only be 20 minutes from there. I've never used mud minnows so I may give them a shot. We're excited as hell just to get salty. A few years back we went down and I only slept a total of 8 hours over 3 days. Booze, and a faulty AC didn't help but the itch to fish was the main reason. I look forward to any updates you post.

Thanks....^^^^
That front is right on our door steps. It will be refreshing to feel cooler temps and lower humidities here. Water temps won't drop that much to get flatties moving. The smaller males will move out when the water reaches close to the 70* mark. Altho there are catches of descent flatties now and then, the big females won't move until the water gets close to 60*. Just getting out, catching some salty air, plus trying my luck at "feeching" is what's it's all about for me. Good Luck and let us know how ya did.

It has been reported that flounder in the 15"-18" range are being caught around G-town. These are the smaller males in the process of moving toward the Gulf. The Galv. Ship Channel and the TC Dike area (on the end-south side) have been producing. Most of the folks fishing the TC Dike are using finger mullet and/or mud minnows. Using your cast net to catch a few finger mullet is best, just take the time to stop near a ramp and snag a few. This way they are fresh and won't "roll over" on ya. I have know idea what they cost a dozen at the bait camps but I would venture to say $8-$10 a doz. Finger mullet need Oxygen....mud minnows don't. An aerator or an O2 setup, or tossing a bait bucket in the water will do. A flashy soft artificial bait will work if you throw arti's. and the go-to 4" Gulp New Pennies w/ Chart. tail. 4" Mullet imitations w/curly tails...red/white, white, chart, pearl/chart etc.. Bag limit is 5 until Nov.1st...then it's ONLY 2. No gigging during Nov. Good luck

While they are slow to move to the passes and constriction points, it's still also a little early for that, best places for good action right now are marsh cuts and areas where those marsh cuts meet secondary bays. Some nice fish mixed in in those areas. It will be quite a while before the action gets good at the typical lower bay constriction points like Pelican SWP and Rollover.

good list on the baits, Chicken Boys tipped with shrimp or flounder belly or Pro Cure works well. Also Flounder pounders are still great when working deeper channels. They work.
