Thinking about heading up to Buchanan/Inks. Anyone fished up there lately ? I just need a thumps up or thumps down. You don't need to get into any greater details. Much appreciated. Thanks!!

I was up there last weekend and didn't do too well. The stripers were schooling on the surface at day break in the middle of the lake...unfortunately they would not hit anything...top water, crank, rattle-trap, umbrella rig, etc.. After about 1hr, all the top water action stopped. That is when most boats began trolling/downrigging.

I really wish more people would give insight to Buchanan. Seems when you mention the name the forum goes silent.

Great Striper fishery. Also Inks Lake is good!

People up there don't report much. There's a Austin fishing forum for that areas. And even so people only talks about crappies a lot on that forum and very little on Buchanan stripers and hybrids. I was there and caught limits of stripers including my personal best last I was there,so I know a good fishery exist there at that lake.
I would like for people to report on them hybrids and stripers so that they don't get taken off the list for stocking. I know those people there put out their own money to stock hybrids and if it doesn't attract more people to come fish their lake and show them those money stocking is not wasted, they just might stop stocking them hybrids. Being quite about a lake is good not to attract too much boat traffics but on the long run TPWD and the private funding to stock fish for that lake that every one is all secretive and all quite about might just get reduced stocking or not at all if they get the impression no ones fishing for them.
Take for example Lake Somerville. Lake got taken off the stocking list then now are back at the very bottom on the maybe we'll get it next year list.

Been there a couple times, but not in a while. Went with a guide both times, one good trip one bad. A spook thrown at topwater boils in the morning produced some fish, and after that it was live shad. Guide said you need to be there at 4 am to get the shad b/c they only come up for a short while. Fished mostly near the dam.

Hybrids are stocked by the LBCC and stripers by the State. As far as fishing I haven't been in a while but I know up until recently it was pretty slow according to my guide buddies. Fishing has picked up and the Top water bite should get really cranking. I prefer a pencil popper with blue or purple top. Reports I have been getting is Mid lake. That being said talked to a couple bass fisherman yesterday at the TTZ weigh in and they told me they came up a little at by the dam. I need to get out there soon.

I am the Striper King on Buch.

Hey brandon, tell us that story about you cussing out the wrong guy on the boat ramp. I'm still laughing about that one.

Thank guys for your inputs. I actaully went up there friday night and fish early Saturday morning. I put in at Llano where the Bass Tourney was held. I launch early and beached my boat at Llano. Went to sleep since it's only 4:00am. When I woke up found my self to be cage in with like over a hundred bass boats. Rubbed my eyes thought I was freakin dreaming. Woke my son up and ask him if he is seeing what I am seeing. Yep a freakin Bass Tourney. First thing I told my self is nice going Bruce out of all days I picked today. There goes my early morning top water bites. Long story short I was stuck with the crowd, barricaded in. so I pretended that I'm a Bass Tourney contestant just to blend in and lie to my self so I can feel better. Up till when all the guys starts to look at me crazy with all my downrigger rigged and ready to catch bears as TFF Brando would of said it. They thought I had some kind of a secret weapon to catch Big Bass and win the tourney. Next I pledge the American Legend to the American flag with all the bass guys as it was part of the tourney initiative. Very up lifting moment. American flag flapping straight out. Wind wisping by at 10-15mph. All held their hats to their chest quietly watch the sun rise and listen to the pledge. I almost cried. Finally the time had came I waited as I watch one by one numbers call and speed off and awaiting for my number to be call so I can speed off to my last super lucky location. 15 minutes later than I realized hey I don't have a number I'm not even in the tourney. Sure heck looked and feel like I am. Speed off turn around and everyone looked mad at me cause they think I cheated and didn't wait for my turn to be call so I can get a head start. Conclusion wind chop up the water. Very hard for me to look in open unprotected water with my little flat bottom dingy. Troll along side them guide and nothing for them or for me. Keeping my distance I troll around guide that are live baiting at the same time observing. Seems they are catching nothing. With the water too choppy and bass boat every where I call it quite by noon headed down to Inks and same thing. Not a fish to be found. No schooling activity. NOTHING!! So I pack up went home visited Somerville picked up a quick limit of large white bass and three hybrids and went home. I refuse to go home skunked. It's fish and chips tonight baby. Yeah!! How's that for an Adventure!! loco_2

At Somerville the white bass and hybrids wanted the slabs. It did not matter what color slabs. They just wanted to eat. It really felt great catching them again with slabs. Trolling can get so boring so quick.

And the weirdest thing is a cop in his cruiser pulls up to my truck and ask if he can fish with me in the tourney if I needed a partner?? Defiantly the weirdest trip I've ever experienced. Thought I was getting a ticket for sleeping in the park at night.

Next time I'm bringing a portable grill on the boat.lol!! Jk!!

That's why I like Arkansas. They believe catching and releasing any size stripers is not good and may lead to many to die unnecessary. No size limits on stripers and hybrids at most lake. Catch your limits then just stop go catch something else. I think that's what they have on mind with the no size limits. This here striper would of made good fish sandwiches if it was caught in Arkansas.

Three lakes in one trip. Now that's what I call hard core. Buchanan has lots of good structures and timbers all along the deep channels. Perfect habitat for stripers. I shall return again during winter to check on the winter bites. Inks lake is a magnificent place to go camping. Conoe and kayaks rental right on the lake. Really nice park.

What a die hard! Never give up. Good job on the late recover at Somerville. It's hard enough for me to launch and load my boat once a day, much less 3 times. You get a big>>thumb
