I'm looking for a 4x4 2014-2016 models. I see the ecodiesel and ecoboost have a good following. I'm not brand specific just want a crew cab. I drive 80 miles round trip for work and pull 20 bass cat and 32' bumper pull but donly it rarely. Aldo have 300 mile round trip to deer lease. Thoughts on mpg's Vs cost of diesel. My current dodge hemi megacab 2500 getting about 14 on hughway

I have an ecodiesel and I have driven an ecoboost quite a bit.

They are somewhat opposites. The ecodiesel will get great fuel mileage and tows well but is slow. The ecoboost is a powerhouse compared to the ecodiesel but is thirsty.

I love my ecodiesel because of the fuel mileage. It will do what you want, but will probably feel slow compared to what you normally drive, but will undoubtedly get better mileage. I towed about 3-4k lbs with my ecoD a month ago and got 21 mpg... an ecoboost would struggle to get that empty.

In the end it still comes down to performance. If you like a sporty ride with get up and go and ecodiesel is not for you.

I wouldn't want to tow a 32' TT behind an ecodiesel. Just not enough passing power. If just talking about commuting or towing a bass boat, the ecodiesel would be hard to beat.

I don't know how well the ecodiesel would tow a 32' tt. I know it will do it as there are people on a ecodiesel forum who tow that and more with one cross country without issue. They also report 13-16 mpg doing it. Our TT is 30' and I have no reservations about towing it. If you have the 3.92 gears it will run better than mine and it really doesn't hurt the fuel mileage much. The ecodiesel is slow from a start, but in my experience when you are up and moving it is pretty responsive.

I agree with redchevy. The ED is slow from the line but has plenty of passing power on the highway. I have passed people with my bass boat behind me on 276 between here and Fork.

As for the ED vs EB debate, I think the comments above are right on. They are different beasts. The ED will get considerably better mpg but won't be as fast. It'll also be a little cheaper to buy and a little more expensive to maintain.

As for gas vs diesel costs, usually gas is cheaper when it's under $2.50, diesel is cheaper when they're above $3.50, and it's about a wash in between.

If I had it to do over again, I'd buy the ED again in a heartbeat. I have an app that measures my actual gas mileage (towing, city, hwy, etc.) and I'm getting 26.5 mpg. If my commute was 40 miles instead of 15, my mpg would be well above 27. The gas mileage on the ED is significantly better after 10 minutes of driving when the engine warms up.

All that being said, it's worth noting that the ED doesn't do all that well if you drive 75-80 mph or more. I'm sure the EB doesn't either, but I've slowed down from driving 75-78 on the highway to driving 67-68 mph. I think if the engine was warm, I would still do fine at 72-74 mph, but my commute is just too short to drive it hard with a cold engine and expect good mpg. But I think if I had a long trip and kept it at 70 or under, I could probably get 28-30 mpg. It's a really amazing truck. I love it.
