So I'm wanting to fish for gar again, but this time near my area. I don't have a boat, so it's going to have to be from the bank. Any good spots near the Carrollton/Lewisville area?

The time I went I was using minnows for Crappie / sandbass fishing .I wasn`t trying to catch a gar but I guess a Gar will eat minnows.I don`t fish for them so I don`t know what a good Gar bait is.

Are you looking for any gar? I have hooked up with some big spotted gar from the Shady Shores boat ramp on Lake Lewisville. You can also hike the Elm Fork of the Trinity North of 380 or South. I have caught some big spotted gar there too. Lake Ray Roberts Dam spillway always had some nice sized gar too.
If you hike South of 380, you need to go about a 1/2 mile down to the first real big bend in the river. It is a deep hole that holds a LOT of fish. The BIG gar hang out there. I have had huge gar bumping my kayak in this area before just because they didn't like me there.

California Crossing Dam on the Trinity! Any cut bait 2ft under a bobber, not sure on hooks though, maybe treble and hook it over 2 barbs? Used to hook minnows on lures like that for catching gar below Granbury for fun and it worked.

In that location you'll have plenty of chances to catch Longnose Gar. By far....BY FAR...the best and reliable way I have ever caught longnose gar was by (as Eric said) placing a small bluegill/sunfish on a j-hook about 2ft off the surface and then sight fish for them. When you see them break the surface, cast out toward them. But...here's the "reliable" part when it comes to hooking them. Get some white nylon rope and cut off a 1ft section and fray out the fibers and then tie a few or more, strands onto the eye of the hook so it hangs down over the bait. When the gar takes the fish wait till the bobber goes under, then count to around 30 and s l owly start to apply pressure. You're not going to hook the gar with the hook (even though it will occasionally hook onto to some flesh of the mouth) but the nylon strands are going to get caught in the gar's teeth and then the fight is on. To be honest, you can also add more nylon and not even use the bait fish, but again..I like using a live sunfish in this method. I sometimes also cut the bait and let it bleed, etc. You can fish this on top or on the bottom! I've caught my biggest Longnose Gar on the bottom btw. Good luck!

Any access to the trinity will have a decent amout of gar. From lewisville to dallas.
If the fish don't bite your not baiting right...

So I know that this is a really late response, but aren't you not supposed to bank fish near the boat ramps?

So I know that this is a really late response, but aren't you not supposed to bank fish near the boat ramps? Bank fishing near a boat ramp usually isn't a problem. It's the guys who park their butts ON the boat ramp to fish that is a no-no. Of course, if you're bank fishing near a boat ramp, but have your lines across the boat lanes,, that's not good either.
