Last week, before the storm I entered the waters of the fabled Indian River Lagoon near Fort Pierce. Although I still had rain throughout my time here, I fished around the storms. Wading both the East and West banks I was able to locate many legal areas to park my car and enter the water. I would scan the area for bait and if it looked fishy, I walked right in.
One evening, after dodging storms all day, I found the scene I had been waiting for. As I entered the water, as far as I could see, there were tight balls of mullet being busted, and not another person or boat in sight! The mullet were circling just as approaching Hurricane Matthew. As the circles would get tighter and tighter the mullet would go airborne, with Jacks and Snook flying right on their tails. If I cast into the mullet I’d catch Jacks and Bluefish, Snook were caught on the edges, and trout were caught away from the schools. I was using lightweight tackle and was fortunate that the 100 pound class tarpon that were going airborne and crushing the schools didn’t decide to eat my lure. Needless to say, catching was easy on this evening wade and I experienced the East Florida mullet run exactly as I had dreamed I would. I threw Controlled Descent Paddle Shad in every color sold, and some special colors and caught fish on all of them. I found the brighter colors did better than the natural colors with all of the bait present. Check out the video.
