I am going to Vail next week. I plan to fish the Eagle and the Colorado near State Bridge. I would like to drive up Coffee Pot road to fish deep lake/river. Also drive up to Piney lake/river. It looks like Piney lake is private with some public fishing. Wondering if anyone know if the roads will be passable this time of year and if the lakes are open to the public? Otherwise, any other suggestions. I have fished the blue. but figure it will be very low this time of year.

Just down near Copper Mtn is Ten Mile Creek. Not big water but can be fun for brookies, browns and rainbows. You can do the 14 mile bike ride down from Vail Pass to Frisco and fish all the way down.

Thanks for the tip. I was thinking about stopping at Black Lake near Copper Mtn. So I will check out Ten Mile Creek.

Roads are all in good shape - indian summer for the most part in Central CO. Snow hasn't appeared below 11,000 feet yet.

Just got back from Avon. They got two inches of snow on the mountain Thursday morning making the drive up no fun. I was worried we would have a cold wet week, but the sun came out Thursday afternoon and it was beautiful for the next five days. I hiked the beaver creek trail to beaver lake. Only fished the lake. It was very cool. Caught a cutthroat on a wooly bugger. Then I fished the Eagle. Most deep holes had browns. Caught several in the 15 inch range. Most were caught on a prince nymph dropper, but one on an elk hair caddis. Then we drove up to Piney Lake. The drive is beautiful. Ended up fishing the Piney creek for brook trout. These little dudes were hard to sneak up on, but fun to catch. They were hitting dry flies in the afternoon. Some hikers told us we just missed seeing two moose at the creek 10 minutes earlier. In the late afternoon, I would take the wife to the town lake to fish for stocked rainbows. I would catch a few on a stimulator, but she would catch 15 or 20 on a super duper. This lake is basically an option to the local grocery store. So three or four trout ended up being fish tacos. Finally on the drive back to Denver, we decided to stop at Breckenridge for dinner. I was able to fish a few minutes at Ten Mile Creek in Frisco. Caught a nice brown. He was skinny with a big head. Just starting to get that long hook jaw. I am thinking he was at the end of the spawn, which is why he was skinny. The Blue running through Breckenridge looked like a blast to fish. So I am definitely planning to go there next year.

Great report! Appreciate the pictures....and envy that eating.

We did eat the three rainbows. Fish tacos and local beer. The town lake is full of stocked trout and a few salmon (i've been told). Nice to have a place to catch a keep a few. That way most people release the ones caught in the rivers.
