I know that some of you put your fish in ice chests while you are fishing. How long will the fish stay good in an ice chest? Do you put ice in the bottom of it?

I dont usually keep fish but I have gone out with guides a few times and kept some.
They just threw the fish in a dry cooler, no water or ice. We fished 5-6 hours, then they cleaned the fish and got them on ice and home in under an hour and in the fridge or freezer.
Never got sick or anything lol.
I would guess if on ice, they keep quite some time. Days even if you keep ice.

We used to fish western Oklahoma soil conservation lakes out of float tubes. We would spend all weekend, with fish on ice . Come home late Sunday and fillet , no problem.
They will keep for several days on ice,

Like Mo said, you're good for a couple days, especially this time of year.

We plan on having 3 days worth of slabs on ice this weekend. They'll be fine! We keep ice on the bottom and add ice to the top and drain the water. They last several days this way and are easier to clean!

Every commercial fish sold has been on ice for weeks. Big trawlers don't come in after they catch a few.
I always buy a little more ice on the way home and put this on top of the fish and clean them in the afternoon of the next day. I've cleaned them on the second day and the fish were practically frozen.
John 21:3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee.

As long the eyes are clear and the gills have good color you are fine.

heavily iced in layers, draining the water, 3 days. ice them as soon as caught.
COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

If no ice you can start to feel the meat start to get just a little soft after 4 hours (longer if colder). If there is some ice in the cooler the fish will last 24 hours before having to be cleaned. If you pack it with ice it will be longer. I am always putting my fish into a cooler since I'm usually on the bank and thats the pattern that I have.

Everyone said it perfectly, as long as you keep them well covered and water drained they'll keep for a few days no problem.

As long as the gills are pink to red. If the gills are white your fish are bad.
