If your gonna do it a lot and want a dedicated rod get an 8 ft rod. If your going to be flipping all day I suggest getting a good balanced rod like the Powell Max 3D Mag rod.

i bet an 8ft rod would help. I have been trying for a long time now. I guess I am a slow learner but I am finally getting it. i have found standing in a boat one can use a wide long arc to accelerate the bait. from a sitting position everything is sped up to get any distance and the arc is smaller due to close proximity to the water. one good thing about a kayak is it does not spook fish too bad and you do not need to pitch real far.

I am far from good at it like YakinJunkie but like he said practice.

I have taken to pitching more than a straight flip.

With some practice you can get very accurate at hitting your spots.

Takes time to get really good but you will get it down if you keep at it!

No intention to argue here, just an alternate view.

I'd recommend a very short rod, maybe a 6 footer. St Croix has some 6'6" Tidewater Inshore rods but there are some 6 footers out there, too, I imagine.

Why? In a kayak you are going to be able to stage up right on top of the target areas so your pitching and flipping is going to be over very short distances. A short rod will allow more range for the rod to dip and flip while sitting down.

I'd likely pitch more than flip from a sitting position.

Finally, you'll get so much more pulling leverage from a short rod since its lifting point is closer to the fulcrum (hands). A medium heavy would be a good power rating. A moderate tip would give even more leverage over the fish.

I'd only use an 8 footer if I were standing in a kayak; still, a 6 footer would be better.

One other thing. If you'd use spinning tackle instead of a bait caster, for most of us our accuracy would be improved and the action of the terminal tackle would "drop" through the little openings on slack line making for better action as it drops down. More bites?

ok so I already bought a rod before reading these suggestions, I bought a lews tp1 speed stick, 7'3" medium heavy, I did practice pitching in my room, sitting down on the floor trying to pitch a 3/8 jig into my shoe haha, I did see a YouTube video where a guy said he uses a roll cast to softly get the lure into pockets.

That's the way to do it! Emulate the height you will be seated at in the kayak and make a lot of reps.

There is one other thing: You can flip or pitch side-armed. The issue will be that you add not only the distance issue of being long or short on your cast, you also add a flipping or pitching "left or right" of the intended target.

Still, if you can perfect a side-arm toss, it'll offset some of the being down low and seated issues.

With spinning reels, one can actually open the bail and literally "toss" the terminal tackle into a nearby target with your hand.

More proof that we generally fish too fast and that soaking a bait is often more productive than giving up too soon.

This has happened to so many fishermen and it should inform us regarding fishing speed . . . and one other thing: hook setting.

Interesting how a fish can pick up a presentation, unbeknownst to the angler, and set the hook on itself.

This shorter rod I think is a good tip for some. I use my 8 footer and it works great for me but I prefer to stay back and roll or pitch the bait into the target. Also I am very tall and sit high in my yak.

If you have shorter arms and sit lower that 6'6 rod might be killer esp if you prefer to use a standard type of flipping and dont feel comfortable with roll casting or pitching.

Love the visual of the guy sitting on floor in his living room pitching to his shoe lol. I been there too brother! ha ha ha.

Roll cast pitching with a 7footer; keeping the jig or trig just above the water as it is pitched to the target.

I've found this technique much easier to accomplish pitching with my right hand, using a left handed reel.
Tip: If you roll cast from the right side of your body, aim just to the right of the target--it's the same motion of a side arm slider pitch from the mound. If roll casting from the left side of your body (my preference), aim to just left of the target. The bait will enter the water softly feathering the spool with your thumb with a slight horizontal axis movement (side arm slider pitch)

I flip to the side. Same technique as standing. Grab the bait, but instead of going in front I swing the rod out sideways like I am hitting a tennis ball backhanded. I am still practicing it, but it has worked well.

I use 7' rod

I'm not as tall as YakinJunkie... not even close. I'm only about 5'5 and I've had this problem for a while. My flipping rod is only 6'9. I found that it's easier for me to even attempt to flip from the sitting position. I have practiced enough to get way more accurate with a roll cast than I used to be.
If you're short, the flip my not work out well for you. There are other ways though. I can drop a bait in using a roll cast about 10-15 feet away with making minimal splash. It took me a long time to get this down because you have to feather so much, but it can be done.

So I have fished out of bass boats my entire life and pitching and flip was never an issue. then I found this yak LIFE and fell in love with it. I have tried and tried to flip and pitch from my seat and just could not get it to do what I wanted. BUT yesterday I did a seat mod on my FS12T (I know I said I would never BUT) and I was able to flip with no issue last night during a tournament. In fact my big fish (17 1/2") came from a flip shot on a fallen log. So I am very happy to say a little 4" lift of the seat and life is much better!! Also I use 7' rods for all jig, crank, Texas, shaky, and top water and a medium 6'6" for swim bait. so raise of the seat and I am now able to flip with ease
