Went out to a new spot out at Town Lake here in Austin. I had really high hopes that the cooler temperatures would lead to more activity but things were really slow going. I started out with big poppers and streamers but after striking out I figured it was time to start small and work my way back up the food chain. I tied on Bennett's Rio Getter hoping to score a sunfish and avoid the looming strike out. I casted out near the shore and felt a big tug on my line. Next thing I knew I had landed my personal best Rio Grande Cichlid. Landing a big rio has been a personal goal of mine since I moved to Austin. I see them in all the waters around Austin but they have proven quite elusive for me on the fly rod. Landing this bruiser made a tough day worthwhile. Pictures just don't do these fish justice in terms of their beauty.
