Picked up a 9 weight and hope to use it in the surf soon targeting reds and trout but could pick up about anything out there. Any certain loop knot you would suggest for the surf?

Simple mono loop knot.

loop knots are great when you're fishing in still or calm water as it tends to impart more movement to the fly...IMHO...in a pounding surf I would opt for an improved clinch or Palomar...easy to tie and certainly strong enough for the conditions you're likely to encounter.

Orvis website and Grog Knots have animated how-tos...good luck!

Thanks for the reply. Both of those along with the uni to uni are my go to knots. However, with the improved clinch I go through the eye twice, make the wraps, then through the double eye loop and back through the wrap loop before pulling tight.

Rapala Loop. Super strong. I use it marsh, bay or surf.

No doubt about my answer to this one: Lefty's loop knot

http://www.flyfisherman.com/blogs/editors-notebook/leftys-slip-loop-knot/

Its perfect for everything to about size 18 and smaller.

Stronger by scientific tests than improved clinch knot, plus provides critical flexibility.
