Buddy and I headed out to the Pecos River outside of Comstock Wednesday morning. The plan was to head as far upriver as we could get in my 14 flat bottom jon boat and camp, fish and enjoy being off the grid. No cell phone service or other people anywhere nearby.

Left at 4:30 am from Leander and made a stop at Mauricios in junction for breakfast tacos and coffee. Good breakfast tacos and homemade tortillas. Made it to the ramp by 1000 am to find the water level around 10-15 lower than it was in 2010 when a few friends took their kayaks here for the same trip.

Made it approximately 8-9 miles upriver and pulled the boat through a few hundred yards of 1 foot deep water and small rapids to a prime camping spot along the shore. This area is very remote and not many people come through here. There are 100-200 feet cliffs on both sides of the river and no way out except on the water. We saw lots of wild goats and sheep along the cliffs but never came across any coyotes or mountain lions fortunately.

Set up camp and floated in some of the rapids to cool off before fishing. Water clarity was amazing and you could see the rocky bottom in the deeper holes which were 9 feet deep. Saw tons of bass, perch, carp, catfish and carp. Felt like we were standing above the fish tank at Bass Pro or Cabelas.

Fished that afternoon and evening and caught fish on wacky rigged senkos, shaky heads and landed my new personal best bass on a weightless fluke fished on top
water. Weighed 6 pounds and 6 ounces.

Day 2 the fish had lockjaw and we only caught 1 bass each so we decided to head back instead of staying 1 more night. We had fished about half of the way back to the ramp already anyhow. Would recommend this trip to anyone wanting to get away from it all and needing some relaxation.

Sounds like a cool trip. Enjoyed the pictures and they reminded me of a trip a couple of college buddies and I took down the Rio Grande river back in the early 1970s. Then we were jug fishing and paddling down river. Put in close to Redford and ended up near Lajitas. Took us about four days but caught several catfish. We were sunburned, starving and so sore when we finished I could hardly walk. I had Rio Grande sand in every body crevice and pore that my skin had. Was a trip I'll never forget. Loved it then but wouldn't repeat it today for anything... Lol
Thanks for your pictures and story that reminded me of my younger days.
Also good bass and your personal best.

Saw a border patrol rig and a couple guys going after some catfish at the ramp. Once we were a few miles upriver we did not see anyone else the rest of the trip until we came back to the ramp late the next day. We both have chl's and were carrying. Mountain lions and coyotes are rare but live in the area.
