Why??? Hook Set & Tools

HOOK SETS:
I hear fishermen talk a lot about missing strikes because they set the hook to slow. Many misses are because the fish didn't ever intend to eat the jig, just to bump it. I have seen Crappie in aquariums do this a lot. A slow hook set sometimes works better.
Your being too slow was probably not the problem.
Different anglers set the hook differently, learn what works best on each day.

This video shows three different anglers hook sets. All work at times.

WHY VIDEO:
Many athletes video themselves to pick out their mistakes. Why not fishermen?
Since I began using GOPRO I have noticed a lot of things that I was unaware that
I do regularly. Sunday when I had a bad day I was fishing faster and moving my jig more than Rick & Guy. We were all using braid but they both had a mono leader. I didn't.
It hadn't mattered the week before but I think it did Sunday.

Monday I fished with Mike and he caught the first 6 fish using mono. I added a leader and caught the next 7 fish. In order to get bites we had to downsize baits and dead stick.
Very lite bite but we kept 18 by 11:00AM.

So: when using braid I will always use a leader just in case.

This and that:
Paint or no paint on jig heads. I have always felt that it didn't matter but lately have found out that sometimes it does matter to the fish. I carry both now and try different ones at times.

I have a bag of small marbles on my workbench. I use them regularly when preparing for a fishing trip.I will give a seat on my boat for a fishing trip to the first one that guesses their use.

clean and polish unpainted jig heads?

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

Nice video sir. I too have noticed my dad and I have very different type of hooksets.

Are you using the marbles to make them into jig heads?

When I set the hook if there isn't a slab on the other end look out cause there's a jig coming back at a high rate of speed in less than 12' of water! You need goggles around me! Always been that way and too late to change now! scared

If you know all your marbles are in a bag on the workbench you never have to worry about losing em all!! roflmao

I like the music to your videos BTW! Makes me smile! Good job!!! thumb

clap

Dad use to carry a coffee can full of small gravel on the boat. If fishing slowed down, he'd grab a handful and throw it into the water. Dad said it sounds like small shad being chased and would sometimes turn the fish back on again.

Marbles..I got no idea.

Nope, no one close so far. I've lost a few of my marbles but none of these.

Hint, I use them when I powder coat my jig heads and when I dye my plastic baits.

Volume displacement to get the dye or paint to top of jar where its easier to get to.

After watching the video, Slewfoot is definitely the "struck by lightning" hookset type. Gotta be careful fishing around that guy.

I noticed a certian tip movement that I wasn't doing on purpose that prompts bites often. I only found out by watching my hook sets in video. It absolutely helps!

before you head to the office you grab one marble. That is how you select the color of the day.....

I have powder painted probably 20K jigheads in the last 5 years and have never used "marbles" in the process??

Are you using them to hold up the jigheads after painting??? noidea

use the marbles as some kind of counterweight - less weight needed take a marble out, more weight needed put one in?

Or

To break up clumps of powder coat paint?
