I have been thinking about getting a deeper fish finder for my yak but I wanted to know what are the other options for a fish finder on a yak

I use a Humminbird HELIX 5 SI GPS KVD. It works great and I can use the SI on deeper lakes. Right now i am using it to scan down image only as i am fishing in 3-6' of water int he bay for trout, reds, and flounder.

How long is the arm you use over the side for your SI ? I am looking at them and want to be sure to get long enough but not too long. Thanks

Ducer Arm on Amazon

Here is what I was using before I went to rail system...

I mounted my Lowrance DSI transducer through a scupper hole. I prefer my Lowrance over my Vexilar portable finder.

I mounted my Ray Marine Dragon Fly with the Lowrance supper mount. Works great!

You can also shot through the hull, I have buddies who have done that and they are happy with it.

I had a wireless Hummingbird unit for year and it was ok. But when you step up to the "real" units, its a whole new world.

Do you have any problems seeing the detail on the Helix 5?

My one worry is that the screen would be too small to really make anything out especially when using the side imaging.

I recently put a Lowrance Hook 5 on my Heritage. Through-hull installation and I've been very happy with it. Went with the 5 because I was worried the 4 was too narrow to go split-screen and be able to discern detail on the down scan and am glad that I did. I made a small video of how I had everything laid out before final installation here .

The 16:9 ratio display is very good for Side Imaging. My first SI unit was a 5" square display model and I had no problem seeing fish and stuff. Just have to use a shorter SI Range setting so stuff is displayed larger. Of course bigger is better though.

The post about not using Side Imaging in 3'-5' depths doesn't make sense. Side Imaging is the best sonar technology to use in shallow water. You can see fish and stuff "over there" when there are no fish below the transducer in that depth. Humminbird's Side Imaging gives you hundreds of feet of coverage as long as the transducer is not buried in the bottom and the bottom is flat enough.

This is 200' of coverage in less than 4'. See the bass on the left side?

It isn't if you use a Chart Speed that is faster than the GPS speed so stuff is displayed larger. The bass was about 4 1/2#, caught it with a Chatterbait.
I specifically remember that one since it was smaller than my best five for that day. The two largest were 9# 9oz and 10# 7oz.
