It was only 4 days ago that Rob and I fished Whitney and caught tons of sandbass, most were small. Well today it was a totally different story. Went to the islands looking for surfacing fish, nothing doing. Throw out the top waters anyway in 15 fow. First cast my pop-r gets popped, I missed that fish but immediately got slammed again - surprise a nice striper. Well this might be a top water day, nope!
Ok now lets try the spots we fished last Thursday. Marked a ton of big fish but they would not bite. Would catch one here one there and they were mostly big sandies with an occasional good striper. Total flip from last week. Moved over to McCowen flats and picked up more stripers on swim baits and slabs. Sure felt good to feel that striper rip drag and bend my rod almost double. We could locate fish but it was hard for us to get them to bite. The lake up North looked liked it was starting to turn over.

First fish on top water

Rob with nice striper

Shad -it is actually hooked through the mouth

Rob with Nice SB

Double Striper and big fish of the day (22" striper) for me (finally)

44 Diesel - That's interesting. We normally launch at loafers bend but they had it all locked up, could not get in so we launched at the harbor and headed straight to the islands driving right past the action.

We tried loafers bend also found it locked so we launched at Harbor Master. We didn't launch till almost 8 and we could see them schooling from the bluff. I think we saw y'all in Cedron Creek, we got there about the time y'all were leaving I believe. They seemed to want a slab ripped through the schools fast with sharp jerks. That's the only way we could get them to hit.

I enjoyed the little visit with y'all. I struggled getting bites on live bait all morning and finally trolled a big deep diving swim bait up Mcowen flats and got a striper to bite. ended up catching three more trolling that spot , one was 28" and a couple of 24". stayed out till after 4pm trying to get that last striper but couldn't make it happen. was thinking of trying it tomorrow( Friday) but not sure if that front coming in will have any effect. Any ideas on that?

Rob and I always enjoy visits with fellow fishermen. Would have thought live bait would have been good, I guess the striper were just in a chasing mood.

Looks like a wind change right at sunup, it may be a so so day. General consensus is that fishing is good pre front and not so good post front but you won't know till you go - nothing is a given.

Great job. Wed i thought wind would be a negative but no problem. Saw a scool rise near bluffs by dam so i spun around and it was black bass 14 inch just under size. Also 16 striper. I thought they were sandies. Caught and released 12' fun... island sandies popped up and down. Kept a bunch.Saw large schools lower end bluffs but not biting. Trolled, threw etc.How do you get them it bite?

"Whitney is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get"

Sometimes they just won't bite. All you can do is try different lures and presentations
