I am a new boat fisherman and am trying to learn to use a topo to search out spots to try rather than flying blind, which has proven to do me zero good so far.

OK so I have a good topo map to work with to allow me to make a plan. I am including three spots that I think would be worthy of trying to find fish at this time of the year, based upon my limited knowledge. Please give me your thoughts on these spot and if they worthy or worthless. Trying to become a better bass fisherman.

The bottom two I think would produce for you this time of year being a hump. I honestly don't think you need to fish deeper than 10-12 feet this time of year. Fish are going to be feeding and will be shallow. I would suggest graphing these spots before fishing them to see what you have on them. No point in fishing them if fish aren't there.

On pic #2 the road bed with a long point looks interesting. On pic #3 the "hump" bleeds towards the bottom of the pic into a "flat". I would venture to say that would be the "juice" of that spot. Looks nice bud.

Hope you do well.

what day are you going to check these spots out mike? Im probably going tomorrow and would be willing to take you if you wanted to go check them out. Depending on which part of the lake they are in I could probably even show you a good way to get to them.

Imo i would not even mess with the first spot right now, the second and third spot could be productive depending on where they are in reference to the creeks they are in.

Always have a back up plan and don't be too stubborn to change it quickly if what you hear with your ears, see with your eyes, and visualize on your graph tell you otherwise.

For example: Went fishing this weekend expecting shallow feeding/fall pattern. Got to the lake at 0700 and water temp was 76 degrees and initially thought; great, I'm going shallow. As I headed out to my first planned shallow spot I saw lots of bait balls and feeding fish in 11-17fow at the edge of the creek channel (late summer pattern)
The pattern on that particular lake this weekend was fishing mid depth crankbaits, jig, and crig at the edge of the creek channel (timber on the edge of the creek channel at the mouth of the creek was ideal). There were only a few fish caught shallow.

The three spots you have picked out could all be very good (especially the last one--multidirectional drop offs with a funnel between the two humps)

This time of year, I pay close attention to the wind. If it's been a consistent south wind for 3-4 days in a row, I'll start at a spot on a north point facing south, ideally with rock--one of the classic shad ambush patterns.

I am also a relatively new boater and i think you are doing the right thing. Map out several places you think could be good and then go graph them while you are on the lake, that seems to work best for me. It pays off when you roll up on a shcool of fish bannana2

On the first pic move down to where the 29' is printed at end of point. If you notice at the narrowest gap it is a funnel point because depth starts rising again on the right side of pic. Good eye & very near prime deep spot. Work entire point on the left all the way out to deeper. You've got the right idea going.

Thanks gentlemen. These are sections on Ray Roberts. I am just asking about the places and if they are worthy of imvestigating. I have never tried working off shore at all and just wanted to know if I was looking at the right types of places to search.

none of the them, as one reply stated the shad should be moving into creeks, or they have moved into creeks, bass will follow. i would be looking for flats from the mouths of creeks to the first secondary point, where bass could be hearding shad towards the banks. if the creek channel is well defined and extends deeper into the creek system bass could be found further up the creek.

if your on roberts, last month the fishing was very good in Buck from the ramp to turner creek, on either side of the creek, the back of Clarks produced some quality fish.
