So, Cabela's gonna stay Cabela's with like no apparent outward change or are the Cabela's going to turn into Bass Pro's?

This is not good. I'm sure AT&T would love to go out and acquire all the other phone companies. Remember Ma Bell? But the government won't let them. It's the same with all big companies, to prevent monopolies. Yet, Johnny Morris is being allowed to get control of the major boat manufacturers and outdoor sporting good stores. This is not good.

Big difference between a sporting goods store and a utility company. Lots of regulations to avoid monopolies in the utility market. Utilities are considered necessities. Electricity, phone, gas... Fishing lures and bass boats? Not so much. Changes/regulations in the electricity market to do away with the huge companies controlling the market years ago backfired as far as I'm concerned. This whole "right to choose" thing has taken away the consumers ability to get all aspects taken care of by one company, resulted in poor customer service and did not result in cheaper energy bills IMHO. I do agree with you on that a huge sporting goods monopoly will not be good for the economy in the long run: mine as a cunsumer or to the small retail organizations("mom & pop" stores).

People said the same thing about WalMart. How has that worked out for the small stores?

I am not a big fan of BPS and there high prices. With that being said, I do like Cabelas better. Better prices (IMO). Only thing is I don't like the restaurant in the the Fort Worth location. Food is terrible. Maybe bass pro will rip that out and put in a better place to eat.

I hate to see it. They are two different companies that are operated completely differently. Both have a place but it may not be long until they are both pretty much the same.

As long as nothing changes I don't have a problem, but the issue is, a lot will change. I understand that Cabela's wasn't doing so well lately, but this does nothing but strengthens BPS' position. I personally prefer a lot of Cabela's stuff over BPS not to mention their prices "seemed" to be a little better too. Oh well, I guess time will tell........ On another note, the fact that Ranger boats, which is under the BPS umbrella, was sold by Cabela's and not BPS, is an interesting note. I wonder if they will rid the world of Ranger for the Nitro? I would find it hard to believe that there isn't a plan to get rid of competing brands now that they own them. But then again, if they own them, I guess they could keep them as well as long as one isn't pushing the market on the other one......

I've been told ranger can't keep up with the demand for new boats so the price keeps going up. You spend 5 billion dollars you don't get rid of a cash cow that helps you pay that off.

Granted I'm not a Ranger guy but for the boat's sake, I sure hope you are right. They are as iconic to bass fishing as Skeeter is. I witnessed a couple of guys at Cabela's, not too long ago, almost get into a fist fight over which boat was better! Stupid thing is, decisions get made like that which make no sense. Competition isn't what it used to be, especially since conglomerates like what is forming now, happen. I buy a lot of tackle and Cabela's branded stuff that I hope don't go away now.

I don't know anyone that really shops much at either of these places. Plenty of other outdoor/sporting goods retailers in the world.
