I would like some feedback about this please. I just saw a couple of pics on line of the over turned boat that the ball player and two others were killed in the other day. The boat pictured was upside down on some Florida Jetties. The boat pictured (at night) had Blue LED Lighting under the Gunnels. The lighting was installed all the way around the inside. My question is........... Running at night with those on....Does it affect your night vision to the extent you can't see well in front of you?

It could. Depends on how bright and where they are located.

Good observation.

Even dim lights or their illumination of nearby reflected surfaces very negatively affects your night vision. That includes any in the visible spectrum including blue lights. Red was felt for years to affect night vision only marginally (hence the F-16 cockpit reddish orange instrument lighting)but it has been lately shown to still quickly diminish our night vision accuity.

Bow / deck lights may have indeed been a contributing factor.

I don't understand why anyone wants to run up and down the lake at night with lights that impair your vision. In some cases they can cause confusion to other boaters trying to see your nav lights and guys have been ticketed by LE because of it.. I have floods on my T-top for front and back and it's really nice for night fishing, but as soon as I hit the switch to move, the lights go out. I guess I'm just too old for bling.

I have blue LED lights for the deck of my bass boat. I've turned them on while running early morning and evening for a few seconds and it was blinding.

I'm too old too. I installed blue deck lights. Same result. I have totally removed them since and I am debating adding just a few regular white small LED lights to aid in early morning and late night line rigging. That's all that's needed.

My partner just put deck lights on his iclass. They are terrible at night just sitting, I couldn't imagine trying to drive with them on.

Do you have a source for that?

Ya look in any regulation book on lighting rules. You cant run any other lights that would make the required lighting not visible. Plus its called common sense when running at night. All fisherman need to get a rules of the road book and read it regardless of what any think the USCG comes up with rules on boating just because local GW dont have a problem with it doesnt make it legal.

I agree completely. I was just asking lamoon to provide a source for what he posted. When you are under way, there is no reason to have any lights on except legal nav/running lights. JMHO.

I thought you was being a butt. Lol Now days I guess its the cool thing to have all this stuff on really our local GW should be better trained and actually write citations for it because it is really dangerous.

The APD Lake Patrol on Lake Austin has been writing tickets for distracting light setups.
