Occasionally straight black tends to overpower a pattern and at times a grey works better. In this case I agree with Bassmad that blue might have been a better color for the head and gills. Still a very nice effort, particularly the back to sides to belly color selection. The splash of red on the throat makes the pattern complete. The scale pattern is excellent...looks like a greyish color underneath the whitish silver on the sides...great work. Thanks for posting.

nice work. i'd extend your colors toward the nose of the bait and then use just a light shading around the eye socket to accent the eye. bois is right, a little black goes a long way! sometimes less is more.

Thanks Bois d'arc, and Basscat Dad. I tend to find myself wanting to paint baits with striking contrast. Appreciate the comment on the scale pattern. This one took a while. I will say it catches fish. Though they may have been defensive reactions

Regarding black : I typically use "Paynes Gray" instead of black. Seems more natural to me ...unless I'm looking for pure contrast.
I like the Jerkbait pattern you painted...but agree about the head. I love the rest of it though, and bet it'll catch fish !
