I just read up on the donkey/double fluke rig.....very interesting stuff. I am headed down to the coast in a couple of weeks and plan to mostly fish for specks under the lights. Has anybody tried this rig on the coast for trout using soft plastics such as Gulp? I also discovered the Keitech series of soft plastic swim baits and might try them on a donkey rig too.

Anyone ever tried this in salt water for trout or reds?

We used to do double rig on Spanish mackerel and sand trout

Double rig works for catching more fish when you are really covered up in them, doesn't matter what's on the end of them. But then again, if you are on good fish you really don't need it. I fish with a single lure 99.9% of the time.. wait, I can't remember when I actually used a double rig. But hey, if you're in the lights and you're covered up in small fish it's a way to have a little fun.

I do use some Keitechs bass fishing.

Thanks for the responses. The wife, one daughter, and one grandson are all going. I might do a comparison and see if the double rig does any better or worse than a single. I tend to use Gulp soft plastics but will see if the Keitechs work as well. We go to the same place and usually do well. Both times in the spring we racked up our limits with Gulp. But the last time we went this summer I couldn't get a bump on the exact same Gulp minnows. I switched to a really small white speck rig and did a lot better. Strange how one lure can be super hot one time and totally cold another. But I had noticed that the trout were burping up really small shad, so I decided to "match the hatch" with the small white speck rigs and did a lot better on that last trip.

We double rig for Hybrids.

It works in fresh and salt, it just depends on the day and how you like to fish.

Did not do well on the specks last weekend. There are two floodlights on that private pier and one of them was out. And of course, the one not working was on the "good side" of the pier where I have always done better at night for trout. The wind also did not cooperate much as it did not let up until very late both nights, plus it was from the east. The trout just weren't there like they usually are. Tried a tandem rig but later on just went to a single. Managed some schoolies and did catch a 16" and 17" on the Keitech Fat Impact.

Using a tandem rig for flatties.....try the top lure rigged with a Red and White Bucktail jig/4' White Gulp Alive Curly Tail and the bottom rigged w/ a Gulp Chart 4" Mullet imitation. Flatties are "Sight Feeders" meaning they like flashy baits. Flounder ambush their prey. If your fishing a deep channel....9' approx..adjust weights for current.
