So I heard a first tonight about a weigh in at the tourney from a couple weeks ago. I heard a guy caught a 3 pound under and measured it in the boat on the same measuring stick as the TD. They think they will do some good with it and go weigh it in. They get there and they mere the fish but it was an 1/8 over. It was measured in a "relaxed position" with its mouth slightly open instead of mouth shut. Person contested and called game warden over. GW said that was ok way to measure and gave him a ticket for having an illegal fish. WTH? I've never heard of measuring in a relaxed position plus he could have been DQ'd which would have prevented him from fishing other tourneys etc. Has anyone else heard of this? I think it got pretty heated with the GW as well as the TD.

I heard the "relaxed position" language from the GW over the radio during the Sealy tourney last year, and that was the first time I'd heard it before. I've never heard the interpretation for measuring a fish to mean with the mouth open at all, but the way it was explained over the radio was that the relaxed position means not pushing the fish up tight against the lip on the measuring board. I'm all for conservation and obeying the law to the best of your ability, but there are some interesting tactics for enforcing the slot around Fork.
It's always a tough call when they get within that 1/8" range. I had a fish during the Sealy tourney a few years ago that was really close, and I take a conservative approach when measuring. That fish ended up on six different measuring boards (three in my boat, one borrowed from another angler, courtesy board affixed down by the boat slips at LFM and another courtesy board was available closer to the weigh-in) before I was comfortable taking it in. It was between 1/16" and 1/8" under the slot.
If you get a citation in a Sealy tournament, you're automatically DQ'd. I can't remember if it's from that point back or for that day, but I know you're allowed to fish the other days.

If it's not the law I'd take that ticket to court.......the TD can make his own rules, but the GW should not!

Shows mouth in closed position and tail pinched. I've always used the "relax" position. But I'm never trying to get unders. Usually try to get to the 14". Also 1/8 can be noticed if you flip the fish to other side. Seen where one would be just under 18 and flip it over and easily hit 18.

So the next question is does this apply to overs and just how relaxed is the jaw?

That's why it's jaw shut. Look at tpwd illustration. One consistent way to measure. I feel the angler got double screwed by TD and GW. Catch a 27" and you have no issues.

If fish measures on either side it should count been told a couple times by the Texas Team Trial guy who measures fish. Most guys working the tanks never use this "relaxed position" thing They shut the mouth, place the fish firmly against the board then pinch the tail if there is an issue they flip it over and see if it measures.

I walked up on a conversation between contestants talking about an issue that they weren't pinching the tail but leaving it open and sweeping. Sounded like someone got a ticket for it. Seally walked by hearing it and made the comment that it would have been longer if pinched.
There's a lot of money involved in one fish there. It can win over 100 grand. A 2.5 lb won 13 grand. There should really be an expected standard for measurement followed.

A DQ for a short fish does not prevent you from fishing tournaments

Having your fish disqualified is not the same as being disqualified from the tournament... this happens alot at Fork and folks are fishing tournaments the next weekend with out issues.

This, i measured a fish 4 times in the mega bass and it was under on both sides. Brought it in and on one side the tail barely extended past the line, maybe 1/16th of an inch. The guy measured it again on the other side and it was under, of course he couldnt let me weigh it in but i didnt receive a ticket because of how close it was
