It doesn't happen often, but what do you do when a bass swallows your plastic worm hook? I have been cutting the line at the hook eye and wishing the fish the best of luck. Would it be any better to cut off part of the exposed hook leaving the bend and barb buried? Just looking for suggestions or affirmation.

It sucks, but sometimes it happens. I have a nice pair of Milwaukee wire cutters that will cut through anything but the heaviest flipping hook. There is also a way to remove the hook by flipping it over into the bass gills, but I have yet to master it.
The dude abides...

Reach in with your pliers through the gills, grab the shank of the hook near the bend and twist. It works nearly every time. It's borderline magical.

Go in through gills with pliers eye of hook pointing towards gills then push up. Almost fail proof. Lots of you tube videos on it. Research is your friend

I will have to give the through the gills hook flip a try. Now that I have a better plan, it probably won't happen again this year. Thanks for the comments.

I walked someone through this technique over the weekend. I have only had one where it took borderline too long to get in there to get the leverage. Even he did swim off... It is a little more difficult on small fish, but anything near a pound or so, you're good to go!
Oh, yeah... almost forgot the smartaxx comment... Set the hook sooner!

I boated a HEALTHY 3 pounder the other day, he had the eye and about 1/2" inch of hook coming out his annus. I gently removed the hook barb intact. It appeared to be a wide gap 3/0 hook. Released him and swam off !! Mother Nature does some incredible things!!!

I have on three occasions caught fish that had hooks in their stomachs or mouths.
In various stages of rusting. SO they will live.
The gill trick works well. Even better if you cramp down the barb just a little which I will do with new fisherman who are not used to hook setting.... My brother is a real novice and gut hooks half the fish he catches on worms.
I have A LOT of practice with the gill trick. It works.

Try the through the gill trick when you are practicing. It's amazing how easy it is after a couple of tries. Works like a charm.

Gill trick is the way to go. I haven't lost a gut hooked fish in years.
