Looking for some in sight on type of bait casting rod / brand used for skipping jig under docks , your suggestions will be greatly appreciated , thanks .

just about any 7'mh fast tip work for me just takes practice to get it down.

that's it....and no brakes and trained thumb.

Use a 7' rod. I'd learn with a 7' rod before going longer.

Trailer shape will play a big part too..in my experience, beaver type baits make the best skipping trailers.

What weight jig do you think is best for skipping? I tried to skip a jig this past Saturday but that didn't go so well. LOL

Watch Andy Montgomery videos on youtube about skipping jigs. He explains it very well and is a master at it. Find somewhere that you can practice as much as possible. If you wait until you are out fishing to try this you will give up after multiple professional overruns on your spool. Try to practice at the same height as you would be off the water in your boat. Match your rod length that best works for your height and make sure it has some tip to that will load up. I've found that having about 12" to 18" of line out helps load up the rod and help with skipping distance and accuracy. It doesn't take a lot of power to skip a jig, just a quick snap of the wrist. 1/2 oz arkie head jigs with a flat trailer work well. I like a zoom super chunk, but the beaver style without lots of loose appendages work also. I used braid while learning this technique, but can now do it with any type line. Experiment with backing off the spool tension until you get the feel for how to make the cast, then back it off more as you learn and get more comfortable with controlling the spool with your thumb. Practice, Practice, Practice...

I prefer a 3/8oz. 7' heavy rod. And a lot of patience and a lot of cutting backlash out of the spool

I believe certain time of the day the bigger bass will get way back / on structure under docks and under boats and slips , skipping a bait to that area once it stops is about stealth as you can get . Montgomery's video is very informative , we have started doing this and plan on improving , it's a very productive technique , we are at the point of fine tuning now with the proper equipment . 6'6"-7'2" MH-H Fast (but soft) tip, you want that rod tip getting as close to the water on your cast as possible.. like skipping a stone you throw it side arm or submarine, it's the same deal with your jig. So it depends on your boat height, your height and your arm length, so play around with it until something feels comfortable and gets relatively close to the water..

Trailer with a flat wide bottom (Biffle bugs work great for this)

It's going to take some practice.. and by in some I mean a lot. So just keep putting the time in and you'll get it.

Try skipping off the bank before you get on a moving boat that way you can get a better feel it before you have other variables to worry about like controlling your rocking boat. Tight lines and goodluck!

I learned on braid, it's a little more forgiving. I like a 7'3" mh with a fast tip, I wouldn't go out and buy a rod just to learn though. Practice with the rod you would use when fishing normally. Always focus your eyes on where you want the jig to end up, hand-eye coordination should take care of the rest.
