The worst part of making the boat ready to go is greasing wheel bearings. No matter how careful I am I get marine grease on me putting the rubber seal back on. Also, the nice blue marine grease is pushed out almost black by the salty water at PK. Because of this salty water I don't dare not pump new grease in each trip.

I've already had to replace my jack that came with the boat which went bad after only 2 1/2 years. The tongue of the trailer is all rusty inside and I have some nice rusty drip on the floor of my garage. One of the bolts on the bunks has fallen out and the others are totally rusted in. I figure my boat will definitely outlast the trailer. Anyone know of a good boat trailer that won't rust away in salt water? Looks like I will need one soon.

Vault hubs, are sealed units and I have had good performance with them at this point. If you want to eliminate rust, you will have to go with an aluminum trailer. I cant imagine a steel trailer being rusted out in 2 years at PK. My old 1997 Champion Bass boat trailer was still pretty good when I traded boats a couple years back. It got dipped in PK 30 plus times a year. Coastline, McClain and Magic Tilt make aluminum trailers that are good, with quality listed in that order.

Anything but galvanized or aluminum will go pretty fast in any salt water. Even then, the springs will go first. You can slow it down by dunking the trailer, unloaded, several times in fresh water after being in salt.
Corrosion-X is great and is cheaper than a new trailer.

Why are you having to grease the bearings. Can't remember the last time i added grease.

I stopped using buddy bearings and the blue grease. I used to use that blue grease until I pulled the hubs off once and it was hard, now I use Mystic JT6 on all of my trailers. It maybe time to pull the hubs off and replace the seals. The grease should not be changing colors. In the spring I remove the grease cap and pump in new grease via the zert on the axle spindle. When the old grease is discolored I take the hubs off and replace the seals, maybe every 5 years or so.

Dubee: Possum Kingdom lake is salt water. It rusts stainless spinner blades and anything else I've used. To not keep those bearing packed in grease would court disaster.

TCK73: Might be my cheap Tracker trailer or maybe the fact I'm retired and my trailer probably goes in over 200 times a year.

I fish pk alot along with granbury and whitney. The water has nothing to do with greasing your bearings. If you need to add grease you have a bad seal.

I like the bearing buddies because it gives a bit of positive pressure via the spring. I also give mine a few shots of grease a couple times a year. Usually if I am going on a long trip. Close to home not so much.

I had my boat serviced back in the spring for bad bearings and a non functioning master cylinder . The company that did the work , only does trailers and have been doing them for over 40 years .
They advised using bearing buddies if properly maintained . I was told that when towing your trailer , the grease heats up into a more liquid state , then you should apply grease to your bearings before dropping the boat into the water . The theory ( made sense to me ) was that adding just enough grease to the bearings before launch assures , that you eliminate the "air" gap before launch . If you don't do this , the "hot" bearings allow for cold water to enter the "air" gap then over time , attack the bearings themselves . make sure the "spring " moves out just a little , and not to over fill them and blow out the rear seal . A little leakage of grease should be expected and is a good sign of bearing fully greased . An additional step ,take a thermal I/R temp sensor and read your hubs everytime you drive the trailer , good way to see if one side or the other is running hotter than the other .

If you are having to add grease every trip you have a bad seal. Also, why are you getting grease on yourself? Don't add so much that it is running out that will lead to a seal failure.
