I have a lot of miles on my 2005 Dodge Ram 5.7 Hemi. I'm just looking ahead because the cost of new trucks and even a newer used truck. Is a rebuilt engine worth it? I see a lot of people selling their vehicle shortly after installing a rebuilt engine.
Was wondering what you all thought about it.

It is worth it as long as you are not exceeding the value of what the truck is worth IMO. Sure beats the heck out of another truck payment and in theory you should be good to go for awhile again after the rebuild. My .02 anyways

Depends a lot on what shape the rest of the truck is in and if you want to keep it that much longer. Quality rebuilt engines can last a long time, we regularly drop rebuilds in our company trucks until the rest of the truck is pretty much wasted....just don't forget the transmission may be next. We always put in a rebuilt transmission when we do an engine.

Depends on the rebuild. I had a 76 F150 that I ran for 18 yrs and put 2 motors in her, each motor including the original had over 100000 on them. Which back then was a lot of mile on a motor. When the motor in my current truck goes, I'm going to drop in a rebuild unless the body gives up first.

As stated do the transmission at the same time, some won't hold up with a new motor.

As far as selling right after putting in a rebuild, it is probably trying to get more money out of the vehicle.

If your going to sell it shortly I think not worth it. If you plan to keep it and drive it and actually will it is way worth it. Studies have shown it is always* cheaper to fix what you got than buy new.

I'd look for a factory motor with a moderate amount of miles on it. Usually a lot cheaper than a rebuild, bolts right in, and will give you a decent life with the reliability of a factory built engine. Rebuilds are OK if done right, but done right costs more than mass rebuilds from high volume rebuilders. Also might check out crate motor options from Dodge, if available in what you need it would come with the best warranty option.

I just sold a truck I was paying on to get out from the payment. I bought a cheap solid truck from my nephew and got it fixed back up mechanically to my solid standards. It has over 180k on the clock but still goes strong. As long as the frame and body aren't rusted out and there aren't any other issues, I'll drop another engine or rebuild the one that is in it and keep on trucking when the time comes.
It all depends on what the truck is IMO. Mine has the 6.0 V-8 and 4L80E in a 3/4 ton 4WD truck, a very stout combination. Worth rebuilding in my book. I wouldn't do it if it were a base model V-6.....
Your truck, you need to look at it overall and make sure EVERYTHING is still in good shape and see what needs to be done to bring it back to "like new condition" and see if it worth it, TO YOU.
If you have to pay someone to do the work or if you can do it yourself needs to be taken into consideration. I think it is worth it as long as the rest of the package will hold on for another 180k+ miles. Beats another payment!

I have an 02 Chevy Siverado 1500 pickup and people are usually amazed at how great the condition is on the truck and think it is much newer. Still runs great although I did just have to replace the fuel pump in it. Has 250,000 miles on it so I too have been looking into what it would take to replace the motor down the line because I would just as soon keep this truck for many more years. What is the general cost for replacement of the motor and transmission in a truck like this?

I've got a beauty of a 99 GMC half ton with 240k on it. It needs a new a/c. Engine still strong, just starting to use oil between changes. I'm gonna fix the a/c and put farm tags on it. Maybe a crate engine down the road. It got a tranny at 180k. Gotta figure how to get Sirrius back in it. It'll be backup for the Superduty.

On a newer truck, 250k+ miles is nothing for a motor that was taken care of. Its the other things on a high milage truck that will nickel and dime you and possibly leave you stranded. U-Joints, Ball Joints, Tie rod ends, wheel bearings, ect. ect.

Jasper is the way to go - they fix all the stuff that was jacked up when dodge built it. 3 year warranty - labor too. We have a 95 % success rate with them. And they stand behind there warranty !!!!
