A couple of buddies and I are planning to go down Feb. 9th thru 12th.

Of course we looking to kayak fish, no guides. I have been there a few times but always with a guide and we fished the Mexican side.

Probably wont fish that side from the yaks haha.

Ok so, tips? Where to stay? We talked about maybe camping to save a few bucks, that or maybe like the Holiday Inn or what not.

If anyone is interested in going along send me a PM. We have not worked out details beyond dates so open for input.

Oh and where the heck is a good place to launch yaks? So of course would want protection from wind and be nice if there was some fish in the area... you guys know the drill.

You should try the Bass Fishing section. At least they fish Falcon on a regular basis. They know the hotels. They will also know the campsites and whether they are safe.

I couldn't find a post I thought I made about my trip 4 years ago. Might have been on facebook. Went with a high school fishing bud that had been several times. We took his boat and my kayak. Fished for 3 or 4 days, can't remember. Stayed at Best Western in Zapata. The lake was very low.. maybe 38 feet, can't remember. Fished both ends of lake from my kayak and his boat. Preferred the north end from what I think seemed more wind protected. Paddled into Mexican waters from the public ramp, much fishier looking to me with bigger stumps from what I remember. The wind blew hard from what I remember. We caught some fish, most on big brush hogs and dd22s. First three fish caught on day one were in the 6 to 7 lb range. I'd go back in a heartbeat if I could get the time off. Had a great time for sure, just can't remember much that would help you catch fish. I would definitely try both areas as they were each unique.. from what I can remember. noidea

Public Ramp closest to dam... like I said, the lake was low. Plenty of other places in state park to launch kayak from shore if you drive around and look.

Camp site a long way from the water but if you need shade its there. Also small cabins in park.

I believe this pic was also on the road to ramp above.

One of my favorite places on lake. I think the pic above is Valeno area. Can't remember if it was doable from kayak from where I launched. It was windy and I headed that direction but only went a couple of miles.

Lots more to see in my opinion launching from the Zapata ramp.

Caught my biggest fish of trip on dd22 above. Found the plug far above water line after getting out of kayak and just exploring around looking for some air to breathe. It was hot.

Mexico side nearest Zapata.

Now its all coming back.. just go, you'll love it!

Cool thanks for the tips!

If you might be interested in going again, your welcome to join us.

We have the dates set out for Feb 8 thru 13th at this point. Have not booked a spot.

We might stay at Holiday Inn or maybe camp. Most likely the hotel at this point.

I use to go every year along with 5 others. We stayed at the OSO Blanco Lodge. if fishing the dam area we would put in at falcon lake state park.

I moved away from Texas a couple years ago but fished falcon quite a bit from 2012-2014. There are 3 general areas to put in on the US side: the county ramp in Veleno creek, the state park ramp at the dam, and I believe another ramp in the Tigres (never used that one). The veleno should hold some good fish accessible by kayak in February. There is also a ramp at the Oso blanco on the Rio grande, I believe. I always stayed at the Holiday inn. Hit the stripes gas station for breakfast tacos, it's the best meal in the area.

Ok so, tips? Where to stay? Have you thought about the State Park for camping? Also it is at the south end of the lake with two large coves with access to either one at the park. One is protected from the south winds and the other is protected from the north winds. So you have choices each day. Right not there is better fishing for the larger fish. The north end has lots of schoolie in the two pound class.

We talked about maybe camping to save a few bucks, that or maybe like the Holiday Inn or what not. You have three choices at the state park. Tent camping, screen shelter camping, and cabin with air and heat with water and bunkbeds and table. You bring your own bedding. the bunks are wooden only. no spring or padding. I would suggest making reservations for the cabin with air and heat for that time of year. Check out the SP web site and see the choices.

If anyone is interested in going along send me a PM. We have not worked out details beyond dates so open for input.

Depending on the weather as in Cold Front... there might be a spawn taking place in the very shallow water in the back end of the coves. Throw in thick cover in the 6 inch to 1 foot range if you see them on beds. the Yakers have a very good advantage for the shallow water fishing in the back of the coves. The fish will stage and spawn three or four time a year with the right water conditions.... So there are fish in all stages of the spawn for six month down there at that time of the year...

If you have any more questions let me know by a PM on this site and I will try and tell you what I know from past experience at the state park area. I fish the Tiger all the time, but you would have a hard time getting there with out a boat. goodLuck.
