Made this post over in the crappie forums since I usually read over there.... But since it pertains to bank fishing I wanted to post it over here as well.

I am currently planning a fishing event for kids who are involved with the juvenile court system.

I work as a counselor at an outpatient facility that works with kids involved with the courts, we have recently started using more life skills development programs. So I basically take everything I do or have done for fun and try and get the kids involved. So far we have paintballed, dodgeball, basketball, kickball, cooking

Next up on the list is fishing. Our facility is in Plano and I was planning on having the kids dropped off at oak point nature preserve in Plano. There is a pretty big pond there that I have not fished yet but looks promising

I am pretty sure none of the kids have ever fished and will be around age 14-17.

What I could use help with.

I am looking for a few guys to come out the day of and help with teaching the basics of fishing. It will probably be around 15 kids so the more help the better. I cant imagine it would be easy for me to tie 5 lures at once

Also anyone who has fished ponds around the Plano area, tips would be appreciated as far as what species is there.. Looks like Catfish had been stocked but I would assume something else has started to live there

Any tips or advice will also be greatly appreciated! I work with these kids for a living and seeing them enjoy simple things that I do is unreal compared to what they were previously doing.

Thanks,

Scott

Dates and times, and what else is needed, or just manpower?

As far as what is needed, if anyone has anything the would like to donate to give some of the kids that are more interested, I am sure they would appreciate that.

I think I should have enough rods and such but anyone who comes who would like to bring their own is more than welcome to.

As soon as my worm farms get up to speed, I'll provide red wigglers and African Night Crawlers for y'all and even try to show up and bait hooks.

Good work indeed sir!

Another issue I am probably good to have it I have never really fished that pond. I know bob woodruff is not far either. So any tips as to what to target would be appreciated. I am also coming up with some small tackle boxes to provide for some of the kids who appear interested in trying it on their own.

Long term I am setting up a non profit that provides pro social services- fishing, hunting, hiking, football, kickball, soccer, even some type of craft or trade is eventually down the line. So little events like this is what I am going to focus on for the next year or so.

Shoot, maybe one day we could have a fishing team made up of some of the juvenile delinquents.

I am also going to talk to my director about changing to date to the Tuesday after because the Tuesday I selected happened to be the CAT Tournament...

I've fished both of them, but it's been over a year. I've learned a lot more since then, and I did not have much luck before. I'd bet I'd do better this time around.

There's TPWD help available for teaching kids to fish. Helpers, supplies, loaner fishing rods, certificates, etc.

Yea I had seen that... Figured the gear I had plus atleast one or two buddies would suffice. I've had alot of people express interest in working with kids so I wanted to see who would be interested.

I did not put it on a calendar, and I did not seen an update or reminder in the forum.

I really wanted to come help...apologies for missing the opportunity.

I was at a singer/guitar players circle when I realized I had missed the date.
