Is anyone familiar with the trade-in process when buying a new boat? Is it similar to trading in a car? What are values based on?

same deal they will generally give you less than you want for it. the big difference is you don't have to go thru a bunch of drama to sell it.

The values are as low as the dealer thinks he can get it for. NADA is a good place to start. Be realistic. No one cares if it was your Dad's boat or it has been in the family for years with countless fishing trips, memories, etc. Any knowledgeable private buyer is going to want an independent inspection from an independent shop along with a compression test and inspection on the motor.

I took a lot of boats in trade. The NADA was the basic guide that gave you a baseline price to work from. From there it was all about the condition of the boat/motor/accessories. If it was an exceptionally well taken care of boat, that was ready for the water, a well known brand (desirable) with a known good motor, then it would get extra value added.

Ripped seats, faded gelcoat, worn out carpet, and especially dings, cracks and scrapes would get the cost of repair deducted from the value.

I would NEVER take a trade on:
FICHT motors.
Anything that said "Travis Edition"
Bayliners
Redfins
Suzuki two stroke motors.

There you go. Trade in basics.

Luckily, I am self made so I don't have any family hand me downs. No emotional attachments to anything I own.

Thanks for the info!

Most dealers Base line is 70 to 80 % of nada LOW retail. Then deduct everything wrong with the boat. Any cosmetic issues hurt the price even worse.
