My buddy and i are looking to get on eagle mtn. this weekend do do a little duck hunting scouting and some fishing along the way. I have a 10 ft jon boat that we use to hunt from. After paddling 2 miles a 5am for a month last year, i obviously dont want to do that again!! I noticed a 100 dollar minn kota tm at Academy that seems about right for what i want to do. Speed is not an issue. We dont cross the lake or anything, just hug the treeline and cover more water than wading.

My question is this: do i need a marine battery to make the tm go 2 or 3 miles? Will a car battery work for my application? Is this a terrible idea? My friend and I are 19 year old college kids. We dont have a few grand to buy a gas motor. Any input would be awesome! Thanks y'all

Make do with what you have.
Sure a marine battery will last longer on a charge but I would run an auto battery dead before i had to paddle!

If the car battery is in good condition and has enough capacity it should be ok for a occasional trip.
A deep cycle battery sized properly would be a better option but will be $$.
What ever option you go with be sure and take your paddles as a backup plan.

marine. autos are not designed to deep cycle . sure they work but will not last. also construction to withstand the non cushioned shock of marine use.

Put a good charge on the auto battery and bring your paddle for back up and you should be fine. Back when i was your age in a similar situation we used to use whatever battery we could get our hands on. Save some money and get you a marine battery when you can and you will have less worries of draining it completely but use what you have for now.

well if you are going to use it 200 trips in one year you will destroy the auto battery, do to running down and recharging they are not made for the heavy duty use like that. I would think if you are going to have to buy a battery either way go ahead and buy the marine and it will last much better. I will also say take your paddle either way. I will also add if you just cannot afford the extra battery then by all means give it a try the worst case is you will just have to buy a car battery. just my .02

I will also tell you when you are not using it do not put it on concrete because it will drain your battery put it on a piece of wood. Good Luck on your hunting and fishing

Also keep in mind, as soon as you place the trolling motor on the boat it will have to have current registration if it does not already.

Sounds like a fair swap/

When I was your age we would pull my bass rig with my buddy's truck then get to the lake and pull the truck battery out and use it for the troll motor. Then at the end of the day we would pray we had enough juice left in it to start the truck to get us home.

Ahh, the good old days! Life was so much simpler then!!

LOL we used to do that also but we always took a truck with a standard tranny so we could push start it if needed.....and we did a couple times....

That was the old battery cases years ago. The new batteries can be placed on concrete now with no ill effects. I've been keeping mine off concrete until someone pointed it out several months ago and I researched it and found that he was correct.

When I was your age, my duck hunting bud and I would throw my dad's old flat bottom in the back of the truck. We would tie it in with a rope and head to the lake for a little duck hunting. When we got there, we would slide the boat in the lake, clamp on the Minn Kota, and take the cranking battery off the truck to use on the trolling motor. It nearly always worked out.

Marine battery. These auto batteries are good for only a limited number of recharges. A marine battery could last three or more years.
