I am a scientist working at the University of Portsmouth in the UK. I am currently engaged in research that investigates the effect of radioactive contamination on the health of fish found in the lakes in the Chernobyl nuclear exclusion zone.

We have recently been lucky enough to secure funding to expand our study to Fukushima, In Chernobyl we have focused our efforts on several species, mostly the European Perch and Roach as they occupy 2 different tropic levels in the food chain. Owing to the expansion of our study, we have been looking at comparable species, we have identified the Crucian carp as a species present in both locations and the largemouth Bass as a fish that occupies the same niche and has similar habits to that of the European Perch which is present in Japan.

I was hoping to get the benefit of the collective wisdom here and gather some information, Fukushima is located 37 degrees north latitude, this is rougly where santa
cruz, Nevada and the border between , colarado/new mexico,Utah/arizona, kentucky, virginia ... so i would assume that the fish would come into breeding condition at a similar time in both locations, i was hoping you would be able to provide me with some information about spawning time, size and weight and age of fish when they reach sexual maturity

in an ideal scenario i would like to collect fish that are from the first and second generation post accident so that i can compare them to fish from Chernobyl 30 years on and see what, if any accumulative effects occur across the generations.

Any information you can provide would be greatly received and would enable me to make informed choices as to when the best time of year would be to visit the Fukushima site and sample.

Many thanks

Yes, I can help you with your study. Come to Squaw Creek and study the glowing nuked fish population and that will be a fair representation of the effected fish in the Chernobyl area.......

Bass will spawn on their first year in most cases. Or at least try.

The size of the fish will vary based on the climate, forage, water quality etc.

A one year old fish might be 6 inches and 1/3 pound in Minnesota and that same fish might be 14 inches and pushing 2 lbs in Texas.

I would reach out to like a state wildlife agency or college for some real data.

We are fisherman not some sort of science types.

Hacker.... You'll want to find a wildlife biologist from a comparable state (Virginia, for example) who's in charge of stocking their lakes and ask him those questions.

Good luck!

Some of you don't present a positive image of people in the state of Texas where we are reputed to be friendly and helpful.

I'd suggest the op contact a biologist from Texas Parks & Wildlife for reliable information.

http://tpwd.texas.gov/

A couple of weeks ago there was a really good program on one of the science type channels about studying the fish in the lake at Chernobyl and also area wildlife. It was really interesting.

Please contact me if I can help put you in contact with the right people at Texas Parks & Wildlife. You should be able to look up one of the biologists on the site.

Best wishes in your research.

Wow, mixed response huh, firstly i am not a troll, this is straight up, secondly i do fish, not for bass, sadly we dont have them here. As a life long fisherman (40+ years) i also know that scientists arent always the best source of information, good fishermen learn so much about the life cycle, habits and natural history of fish, i would be foolish not to ask, if you want to know ask an expert!.

To those who offered constructive advice, thank you, i appreciate the tips.

I study fish because i love them, always have, but just as important, screw ups like chernobyl and fukushima are tragic for the planet and humans too. this research will provide data that will be used for defining guidelines for human health also.

For those who are interested, here are pictures of a pike i caught at glubokie lake, the most radioactive water body we study at the moment, and a Perch from yanowski crawl in Pryipyat superficially they look to be doing well..
