I am looking for a lake to buy a cabin/house to use for weekends and then after retirement withing 2-3 hour drive from Fort Worth. I prefer going east to get out of the wind. I am thinking of Palestine or Cedar Creek. Any recommendations for parts of either of these lakes to avoid or to look at? Thanks.

I grew up on Cedar Creek in the 80's-90's. It was a "quite" place back then. It has grown unbelievably since. Traffic soo bad on weekends, it's almost like being in DFW traffic. If I we looking for a "get away" location on a lake, It would be at Palestine.

Don't overlook Richland Chambers, south of Corsicana. Lots of water and amazingly low boat traffic. Very good hybrid Striper and sand bass fishing. Good crappie timber plus good year round bridge fishing at 2 lengthy bridges.

I vote for Cedar Creek. I had a place there for 20 years and a lot closer than Palestine. Great during the week and not bad on non holiday weekends. Forget fishing on holidays.

You might consider one of the smaller lake communities around the Tyler area. I'm sure there are more but those are the ones I know of. These are smaller lakes with property owener's associations surrounding them. You have to own property to get on the lake. We have a weekend place at Calendar Lake. It's a dumpy little place (our place, not the lake) but it's great for a weekend getaway. Plus I'm less than an hour from Fork, Tawakoni, Palestine and Cedar Creek. And when it's a holiday weekend I can fish Calendar lake. There will be a few boats on the lake (maybe 5) rather than 5000 that will be on the big lakes on the big holidays.
Just my two cents. We got the place several years back when my mom and stepdad were looking for retirement places. Haven't regretted it for a minute.

Thanks to everyone for your advice. I welcome other comments. I'm not in a hurry but am talking to an agent to start looking. Crappie is what I love now, but in a couple of years when I retire I will probably broaden my passion.
