I'm taking one of my nephews to visit my granny in Pittsburg tomorrow night after work. We plan to get some fishing in on Wednesday. Where should I go for a good bite right now? I'm most familiar with Monticello and have been on Welsh a few times earlier this year. Haven't been on Sandlin or Cypress in many, many years.

Great question. :-) I don't have the answer for you, but I would like the same information. I'm going to try to plan a trip on Friday and don't know where to go. Let me know how you do. Good Luck!!!

I'll report on wherever we end up going. Most likely it will be on what NOT to do, haha. Hopefully one of the TFF faithful will chime in with the 411.

Even with the small cool spell we had Welsh and Monticello will be tough cause of the hot water. Monticello would be my pick between the two hot water lakes (heard some rough stuff about Welsh lately. Last I heard Bob Sandlin was doing pretty well c-rigging points and frogs in grass. Don't know much about Cypress except it is shallow with lots of docks and retaining walls and points. I would choose between those two lakes just because it is likely to get on more fish right now.

I'd go with Sandlin.

I will tell you that if you do decide to go to Monti do NOT go into Smith Creek. We caught some decent fish in there on Labor Day weekend. Went back for a few hours this past Saturday only to find that had sprayed every inch of hyacinth in there. Love the fact they are trying to control that stuff, just wished I had know before I got back in there. Now, in a few weeks, it should be ok but if taking nephew tomorrow I would go to Cypress. Will be zero boat traffic and it will be hard for you not to catch some fish.

Thanks for your replies, fellas. Nephew said he's interested in numbers so I think we'll head to Cypress. This will be my first time on that lake since I was a little kid. Any guidance on approaching it is much appreciated as well as the best place to launch.

I'd go to Bob Sandlin. Fish frogs in the pads early, then fish main lake points with deep cranks and c-rig when the sun gets up a bit higher.

I keep flip-floppin' in my head...Cypress or Sandlin... Where's the good grass and pads to be found on Sandlin?
