So my wife got me a 3 day trip to Totem resorts in Ontario where I will be fishing for small mouth and walleye. I will have a guide the first day but the last two days I will be on my own which is what I am looking forward to the most. I am looking for any tips on tackle and baits from anyone that has done this type of thing before. I leave week after next and want to go prepared if I can.

Thanks for the help guys!

The fish up there don't see anywhere near as many lures as most fish in the lower 48, so the fishing should be easier than you might expect. I'd call the resort/guide and ask for their insight. They've got a vested interest in you enjoying yourself so they are likely to offer pretty goo advice. I've had great success up there with Senko type baits for smallies. Smaller spinnerbaits, and compact creature baits on football jigs can also be dynamite. Find some shoreline with laydowns or some rocky points and you should catch fish. In terms of tackle stick with lighter line (8-12lbs). The lures on average tend to be smaller, so a lot of guys throw spinning reels. You may want to ask about musky as well. You ought to be moving into the fall feeding peak on those, so that could make for an interesting change of pace. Enjoy!

Yellow mister twister jigs (about 3 inches long) with white jig head and bait the hook with a live nightcrawler. Rocky points +1

If all else fails try carolina rigging a rapala original minnow. Won a walleye tournament on Woods Lake, Ontario out of Minaki Lodge back in the 80s fishing that rig when nothing else worked. Caught a big musky using the same bait as well.

A good rule of angling philosophy is not to interfere with another fisherman's ways of being happy, unless you want to be hated.

Used to fish the great lakes with a friend that has a place up there, and we found rock and wacky rigged natural color senkos and hammered down pretty good if bright crank baits wouldnt work. He would take his yacht (which carried a 20 ft rubber boat) and use the same techniques in Ontario and they worked, along with the curly tail grub on a jig head slow rolled that was mentioned above

I had a 7 day trip last month....took way to much tackle !! All I really needed was a couple of rapalas, a couple of spooks and some watermelon flukes. lost count of numbers but over 50 a day easy Walleye a bit different a light carolina rig with a night crawler worked best. Hope this helps.

I used flouro 10-12 on flukes and jerk baits and big game on topwaters. I only lost a few topwaters to teethy creatures, not 1 jerk bait, in fact fished 1 rapala all week

lots of good videos of N MN and ontario smallmouth fishin on utube. Early fall soon up there no need to fish to deep. I would definitely have at least one spinning rod/reel with 6-8lb test. I like drop shot with a wacky senko. Watermellow pepper is a favorite color along with pumpkin w a chart tail. If their hitting on top why throw anything else?

And a flipping stick with heavy braid, wire leader and a bulldog or bucktail in case you see a monster. Neck down current areas near the small mouth reefs esp. Warning seeing big Musky may cause a heartattack.

We go every other year to fish for walleye. 3/16 or 1/4 oz jig head with a Kalin's lunker grub is about all we ever throw. Smoke, chartreuse and green pumpkin are go to colors. Awesome scenery and great fishing 200 fish days per boat is not uncommon.

Jerking lips and taking cold sips.

If you find your self blowing down a bank with wood and rock cover you might find that one of these is your friend.Fish it like a jerk bait to billow out the skirt.

1/4 oz. on 10 pound mono.

We've been doing real good with them on smallies up to 2-2 1/2 pounds or so.

I go every year and all and all you need is spooks, squarebills, jerks, and 5 inch grubs on jig heads. Also some steel leaders for the square bills for the pike. I do not use spinnerbaits just cause the pike really like those. It is great fishing and the smallies are just stupid easy!

Take some sea sickness pills...this time of year the winds can make some rollers and local guides will go out in the slop...talk to your guide in advance and ask him what it working now...have fun !
