Decided to make a corrosion test video on the hooks im using for alligator gar. the hook is a non stainless Eagle Claw L774F-3/0 about the size of a quarter.
i truly believe this is the best hook to use for monster alligator gar for catch and release. Any smaller and you will get a mangled pretzel of a hook back when you hook a monster (which has happened to me with a 7 foot fish on a 3/0 treble once) and any bigger and you will kill the fish by making it bleed heavily.
the problem with alligator gar is they pretty much have to be hooked deep because of the way their mouth is armored. J hooks are not ok in any way for alligator gar they will over penetrate and puncture the primitive air bladder that runs the length of the gar killing the fish by making it not able to regulate its depth in the water.
circle hooks do not work on these fish their mouths are too tough for that.

Im making this video to see for myself approximately how long i think one of these hooks will bother an alligator gar should i have to leave one in the fish, keep in mind the strong acids of the alligator gars stomach and that they are designed to pass sharp things like bones ect in the prey they eat. i will also most likely be testing this is saltwater since im eventually going to be fishing for them there too.

I'm not real sure how accurate this is gonna be, you need some water from the river you're fishing. I fished limb lines and trot lines in several lakes and rivers and the different water will react different with the hooks.

Thanks for the vid and the concern about deep hooking a treble hook in these awesome fish. We all want to think the hook is going to dissolve and not hurt the fish when we cut the line. There's also some debate about using larger hooks and setting the hook sooner in an attempt to hook them closer to the mouth. Have you done any experimenting with larger hooks and a quicker hook set? Looking forward to the next part of the vid!

in my experience you are gonna have them swallow that big hook regardless if you try to hook it sooner, maybe not every time but enough to where eventually you will kill one because of it.(sometime gar dont run they just grab and eat this gar nver moved a single inch i noticed the float bob once 5 minutes before i set the hook but the bait and float nver moved from the location and that gar still had it deep)
im personally going to stop guiding for them if a big one dies on me so im 100% about seeing that fish swim away healthy, im not going to cut corners or possibly take chances with them.
basically TPWD has tagged and released thousands of these fish on a non stainless 3/0 treble hook and thousands have been re caught over the years proving the method of catch and release viable.
as for the hooks i cant see them in the water anymore there are clouds of rust in the glasses in under 48 hours.

i will also say i run a FB group with over 1000 people in it, and i have had several people advocate 8/0 treble hooks and similar hooks (big j hooks)for hooking them on the initial run. one thing i will say is 50% of the fish those people have pics with are bleeding heavily(meaning they are going to die) saddest part is the fish is bleeding and then they brag about releasing her alive, which they didn't.
another thing worth mentioning is a 7 foot gar could have over 500# of bite pressure they can bite ridiculously hard, just assuming you can get them to open up to remove that hook is wishful thinking as far as having it happen every time. i do have a 24inch offshore dehooker in my boat and have used it on the hooks i can see.

my personally opinion is go with the knowledge both Kirk and TPWD know, 3/0 non stainless treble hooks catch gar and dont kill them.
personally i would like to see a 3/0 non stainless treble hook be the hook recommended possibly even mandated for catch and release for alligator gar.

How do you keep your bait on that treble hook?

There is no need to hook an alligator gar at all. I have always used a noose made of piano wire and the hook only holds the bait (a filet of buffalo). The noose cinches around the upper beak and can't come loose or pull free because of the gar's teeth. When you are done fighting him you just clip the wire. I can send a diagram of the rig to anyone that is interested. We really do need to protect these fantastic beasts.
