For those of you that may on occasion use a minnow trap, you know the cone shaped cylinder you find at academy etc., what do you use for bait to attract the minnows? I was told to try dry dog food but that quickly turns into a soggy mess. Thanks for the info if you have it.

dry dog food, or dry cat food, a hand full in some cheese cloth, it works for us. catch bluegills too, good luck

watch for snakes with those traps..

Cattle cubes or dog food in a piece of toe sack works good.

And yes, watch for snakes. When I was a kid, like about 7-8 years old, I hung a fish basket full of goldfish off our dock on PK. When we went out to bait lines the next morning, my goldfish had turned into a snake. I ruined a pair of drawers that morning.

I use a small (15 oz.)plastic, Miracle Whip Jar. I take the blue cap and drill a center hole in and then at the top center of the trap I attached it with screw, 2 large washers and lock washer and nut. Then I took the label off the bottom part of the jar and drilled good size holes around and the length of the jar, and 4 holes in the bottom of the jar. This is so water can drain out but the dry dog food stays in. I fill it a little more than a 1/4 of the way, screw the jar to the lid and put in the water. Works great, when done I just rinse the jar out. This is time consuming to set up about an hour or so, but after that it sure makes it easy from then on.

I usually just throw a handful of dry dog food in a trap and check it the next morning, I've also had success with bacon, bread, a small fish carcass will work well, but I'd say the range cubes sound like a good idea because they don't dissolve very fast. A can of tuna, dog food, cat food, etc with holes punched in it is also a good idea.
