Wondering how the new higher volume release is affecting things on the Brazos. Is it still possible to float down a bit and paddle back upstream before the big release starts, or is is shuttle only these days? If paddling back upstream is still an option, any ideas on when one needs to turn back to avoid being pushed downstream?

Thanks!
Keith

My understanding is that the power generation is tied to demand for power. Which means it kicks on automatically at any time when more power is needed. That being said from what I've read and heard the typical starting time is about noon. Yes you could paddle back up at full flow but you need a fast yak and a strong pair of arms. We have done it a few times and it is tough but not so bad if in the right yak..

Went last Friday and paddled down and back up. The fishing was good as usual. We barely made it back to the dam when they started releasing. If I remember correctly it was about 1230. We where there a couple of weeks back and we where about 2.5 miles down when the rise hit us. It was a grueling paddle back to say the least. They released a little earlier that day, like maybe 1100am.

Matt.

Awesome guys, thanks. Exactly what I needed to know. Gonna use the Dick's shuttle today, but for future reference on a shorter trip, I know to turn back somewhat early.

Thanks again!
Keith

In case you are wondering like I was, the water gets going pretty, pretty quick beginning about 10 right now. Probably later as the days get cooler. Did seem to help the bite until it going so quick that staying out of trees and not getting hung up became a real challenge. Overall though, good trip, caught a nice fatty and a couple just a little smaller.

Agree that you should hit the river early if you plan to boomerang back to the dam. Always have a back up plan to paddle to Dicks in case you get caught and can't get back against the release. As I've said before, depending on the flow, your kayak and your endurance/strength, paddling back against the release can be very difficult. BTW, today was the first time in a while they didn't release at all.
